Small bathrooms should be designed thoughtfully so that they are not only highly functional, with maximum utilisation of space, but also appear visually more spacious. The basic layout of a small bathroom marks the position of the sink, commode and shower area according to the position of the window, door and the existing plumbing lines within the bathroom. Whether you are renovating an existing bathroom with all the concealed plumbing lines in place or constructing a new bathroom, use these measurements to create a comfortable, well-planned space.
Shefali Singh, Architect
1. Minimum size of bathroom
  • The minimum size of a small bathroom ranges between 35 and 40 square feet. Note that these bathrooms are just enough for incorporating a standard-sized sink, commode and shower area.
  • The most prevalent dimensions of small bathrooms are approximately 6x6 feet and 8x5 feet.
Note: The size of a medium-sized bathroom ranges between 40 and 110 square feet, while large and spacious bathrooms measure above 110 square feet.

2. Bathroom layouts
  • Straight-line. The most efficient layout of a small bathroom aligns the shower area, commode and sink on a single wall. This type of layout provides good circulation area and does not let the space feel cramped. Since all the plumbing lines are on a single wall, it reduces the overall plumbing costs of the bathroom.
In this bathroom, the all-white floor and wall tiles, sanitaryware and cabinetry give a sense of unity and make a compact bathroom feel more spacious. Also, the large mirror creates an illusion of more space.

  • L-shaped. Another layout includes the installation of the shower area on a separate wall from the sink and commode. The disadvantage of this layout is that it results in extra plumbing costs.
  • For a 6x6-foot bathroom, go for a corner shower area like in the image above. Install the sink and commode on adjacent walls.
Notice how the light-coloured walls and flooring make this small bathroom feel larger than it actually is.

3. Clearance for sanitary fittings
  • It is important to choose wisely between a floor-mounted commode and a wall-mounted commode for the bathroom. Both these types of commode require a clearance (wall area) of at least 30 inches for installation.
  • A wall-hung commode can be installed at any height that is suitable and comfortable for the user. It is usually fixed at a height of 15-17 inches from the floor level.
  • The minimum wall clearance (area) required for a small bathroom sink is 20 inches and its height of installation is 34-36 inches from the floor level. Alternatively, consider a bathroom vanity with a minimum length of 30 inches and depth of 21 inches.
  • The minimum clearance in front of the wash basin and commode is 30 inches, to allow for comfortable movement.

  • A wall-mounted commode and a pedestal sink or floating vanity give a sense of openness to the bathroom.
Small bathrooms should use fewer colours so as to sport a seamless and clutter-free look. In this bathroom, dark tiles run from the walls to the floor, while white is used for the shower area, sanitary ware and the door.

4. Size of shower area
A small bathroom does better with a shower area instead of a bathtub because it takes less space. Note that a bathtub can only be incorporated within a bathroom with an area of at least 45 square feet.
  • The width of the shower area should be at least 36 inches so that it is comfortable to move one’s elbows while bathing.
  • The faucets and the hot and cold water mixer should be fixed at a height of 4 feet from floor level.
  • Go for a glass partition between the shower area and the dry area of the bathroom as it allows light to pass and makes the bathroom feel more spacious.
Don’t miss the built-in niches within the shower area, above the commode and near the sink. They are convenient for storage and display of bathroom accessories, they add a lot of visual depth and make the bathroom feel more spacious.

5. Size of bathroom door
  • The size of the door should be 30–33 inches, but if there is a space constraint one can go for a 28-inch door. Make sure that when the bathroom door opens, it does not hit the commode or the vanity.
  • In case of a narrow bathroom the swing of the door should open outwards instead of into the bathroom.
Tip: Avoid placing the commode directly in front of the door so it is not the first thing seen when the door opens. It is recommended to go for a flush door with matte-finish laminate for the bathroom.

6. Height of accessories
  • The towel bar should be fixed at a height of 4 feet from the floor level near the sink.
  • The height of the soap dispenser should be 40–48 inches from the floor.
  • Install toilet paper holders at a height of 26 inches from the floor and at a distance of 8–12 inches from the commode.
  • The robe hooks for towels and clothes should be fixed at a height of 5 feet 6 inches from the level of the floor.
  • The towel racks for keeping dry towels should be fixed at a height of 6 feet from floor level and it should be away from the overhead shower.
