Small but bound to be noticed by every visitor to your bathroom, a faucet is a gleaming focal point. A stylish faucet can add a great deal to the overall look of the bathroom, besides offering the undeniably crucial function of providing water. Bathroom faucets are plumbing fixtures that come in various designs, shapes and finishes to meet your design needs. However, you need to consider important factors, such as the size and type of washbasin and also check the faucet’s compatibility with the washbasin or countertop and with the plumbing lines when choosing one. If you are planning to purchase a new faucet, whether for an existing sink or a new one, here is a guide that will help you to decide which kind to go for.
1. Single-hole faucet
A single-hole faucet is suitable for sinks that come with a single faucet-hole (these holes are pre-drilled into the sink for connection of the water-supply line to the faucet). These faucets combine the spout and the water-mixing handle into a composite unit. Alternatively, a single-hole faucet may have two handles – one for hot water and the other for cold, with the spout in the centre. A single-hole faucet can be installed on the sink or it can be fixed directly on the countertop, as in this image. These faucets are ideal for small sinks, compact bathrooms and powder rooms.

2. Centre-set faucet
A centre-set faucet is a two-handle and one-spout compact faucet mounted on to a 6-inch single base. These faucets are manufactured for sinks having three pre-drilled holes; the central hole is for the spout while the other two holes are for the the hot and cold water supply handles and plumbing lines. Note that this fixture can also be installed directly on to the countertop by drilling three holes in it.

3. Wide-spread faucet
Wide-spread faucets comprise of three individual pieces of plumbing fixtures – one spout and two handles. One handle is used to control the hot water supply and the other for the cold water supply. The standard distance between the handles is at least 8 inches. They can be installed in a sink with three pre-drilled holes that are spaced as per specifications of wide-spread faucets or can be fixed directly on the countertop as in this example.

5. Wall-mounted faucet
As the name suggests this type of faucet is mounted on the wall instead of the sink or the countertop. These faucets work best with above-the-counter or freestanding sinks as they do not have any pre-drilled holes within them.

Wall-mounted faucets look neat, are easy to clean and make room for some extra countertop space.
These faucets require a water supply line exactly behind the sink, along with wall-mounted valves (devices used to control the flow of water). Ensure that the sink is deep and the spout is long, with an extended reach that prevents water from splashing on the floor or the countertop. It is essential to follow the manufacturer’s specifications and install the faucet at the specified height

5. Vessel-sink faucet
These are tall freestanding faucets with a long spout. They typically come with a single handle and impart a sleek and sophisticated look to the bathroom.
Faucet finishes
Faucets are available in light and dark varieties as well as standard brushed and polished finishes of chrome, nickel, SS (stainless steel), bronze, brass and so on. Polished finishes look elegant but require periodic cleaning to maintain the sparkling look in comparison to brushed finishes that are better at concealing water spots and fingerprints.

You can co-ordinate the finish of the faucet with the finishes of the towel bars, soap holders, lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures and door hardware, so as to achieve a uniform look in the bathroom.
