Perched lightly on the South Mumbai coastline, this Malabar Hill apartment offers a front-row view to the Arabian Sea.

“With a view like this, the aesthetic was designed to be warm, cosy and timeless. The clients were keen on a design that would endure, something that was evergreen. We chose a transitional design style inspired by ethnic design influences. Vibrant colours and rich fabrics are mainstays and silk, brocade, ikat prints and natural materials are recurrent themes around the house,” says Twisha Thakker, founder and chief interior designer of her eponymous design firm twishathakker_designstudio.

The front door opens into a foyer anchored by a sable shoe rack. A wooden rib-backed bench provides a perch for visitors, providing a conscious pause between the entrance and the rest of the home. A silver chandelier adds a metallic sheen to the muted decor. The floor wears a white Italian marble overlay, which also extends to the rest of the home.

To the left of the foyer, the living room presents a pleasant, elegant ambience, awash in natural light. Here, a seating layout, composed of a cushioned sectional and two bottle-green ikat-printed lounge chairs, takes centre stage. A teak-wood coffee table lies at the centre of the arrangement, while trad brocade blinds perpetuate the ethnic upholstery scheme.

“The living room is enveloped in matte-polished teak veneer and natural teak-wood features. The window offers a splendid view of Marine Drive and the Arabian Sea. As the family is artistically inclined, you will see plenty of artworks in the way of Tanjore paintings and carved wood plaques. Rich brocade and ikat fabrics combine to give the furnishings an ethnic persona,” says Thakker.

The dining area occupies the far end of the living room, visually demarcated by a narrow channel of negative space. A teak-wood dining table, surrounded by complementary chairs, occupies the heart of the area.

The master bedroom is situated opposite the dining area. Inside, a sweeping L-shaped window defines an enclosed balcony, where a glass-backed swing takes pride of place. The bed is positioned between a wall and a window. Behind it, wall panels, serving as a half-headboard, skirt the shape of the window.

A chest of drawers stands opposite the swing, crowned by a gallery wall filled with family pictures. Herringbone panels cover the floor.

“The windows here open up to beautiful trees and provide glimmers of the sea beyond,” says Thakker.

The guest bedroom is steeped in vanilla tones. A cream leatherette headboard zones the slumber area. Above the bed a wooden carving mounted on raw silk lends the room character.

Wood-finish wardrobes characterise the wall opposite the bed. An alcove, underpinned by drawers, hosting a bijou television unit, features in the centre of the wardrobe scheme.

An ivory palette dominates the daughter and granddaughter’s shared bedroom, by way of a diamond-tufted headboard and neutral walls.

“This bedroom had to incorporate both the mother’s and the daughter’s preferences. The mother is an artist herself and many of her works are showcased here,” says Thakker.

A lateral passage branches to the right, hosting a wide wooden workstation flanked by a column of cupboards. Above the desk, a row of storage units, emblazoned with beachside images nod to the outdoors.

“The doors of the storage units feature canvas paintings. These are a personal tribute to the daughter from her artist mother,” notes Thakker.

Opposite the workstation, sequestered from the rest of the room, is a knock-back nook, defined by a fuchsia brocade-upholstered chair and rose-printed blinds that add pops of floral cheer to the solid aesthetic.

“The mother wanted a zone to unwind, so we brought in a Reiki lounge chair to enhance the corner by the window,” Thakker says.
