The spaces in this serene expansive holiday home in Goa, built and designed by Ayaz Basrai of Busride Design Studio, needed finishing touches – accessories, curios and a stylish overhaul that would make each corner shine. So, Basrai approached Suvidha A. Gandhi of Papersky Studio. “My job was to inject life, and a feeling of homeliness and warmth to each space. I did so by adding colours, textures and details. I also needed to create a cool, chic and relaxed Goan vibe in the interiors, which would complement what Basrai had already designed,” she says.

The living room is a large space dotted with pendant lights, indoor plants and comfortable seating. The hues of the canvas painted by the client add layering to the soft colour palette of the room. “I curated this space using decor items from local antique markets, and added a coffee table setup to make it resemble an old Goan home. I picked up wooden lamps with chevron fabric shades and added a mix of shabby-chic cotton and linen cushions on the sofas to give the space a relaxed and casual vibe,” Gandhi says.

“We got as many as 18 to 20 glass domes made, to create our own terrariums. This way, we brought the outdoors in, with lush artificial plants,” says Gandhi.
Gandhi created small vignettes in every nook and corner of the house with clusters of pictures – lithographs sourced from antique dealers and framed in teakwood frames.
At the end of the corridor are french doors that open up to the outdoor space and the garden area. “We used a light wooden, easy chair here, that overlooks the lawn and the pool. We polished the wooden chandelier [a part of it visible at the top of the image] in turquoise to give a pop of colour to the space,” says Gandhi.

The master bedroom has an old-world charm, with the large arched windows and the four-poster bed. “We styled the bed with a self-quilted bedspread from D’Decor and natural, easy-to-maintain cotton hand-printed cushion covers from Inka,” Gandhi says.

All the old teak furniture pieces were given a fresh look by “repolishing them in different hues to bring in an element of surprise and sunshine, but, most importantly, to complement Basrai’s charming interior design,” says Gandhi.
All the bathrooms include wardrobes with a dressing area, so they are almost half as big as the bedrooms. “For creating a focal design point in the bathroom, we repolished the mirror frames. We also added customised rattan baskets for storage under the counter. We added candle lanterns on hooks for the evenings, fun trays to hold face towels, brass accessories especially customised by Isprava, rattan baskets to store extra linen and a splash of gorgeous pink orchids. We also hung old art and displayed blue pottery to add quirkiness to this master ensuite,” says Gandhi.

The children’s room has a modern yet old vibe to it, thanks to the wooden dresser (between the beds), an old-style fan and beds with ornate headboards. “The headrest in teakwood was originally sourced from local markets. Since this is the kids’ room, the client requested us to give the furniture a new avatar. We repolished the bedheads in fun antique sea-green hues, which also played well against the ochre and green chevron cement flooring,” Gandhi says. The dresser between the beds was sourced by Gandhi from a local dealer to complement the sea-green tones. She used fawn bedspreads to balance the green, and “make the beds cosy and welcoming for the kids”.
Gandhi specially picked out real-looking, easy-to-maintain artificial orchids for the bathroom. She sourced hooks and lanterns from local markets and hung them on either side of the mirror to tie in the whole old-world aesthetic together. “I loved bringing in an element of surprise in every corner, giving that additional decorative layering which every space deserves, blending in a feeling of comfort and luxury, and marrying together the architecture and interiors of the space, with the strong influence of styling,” says Gandhi.
