The homeowners, a young couple with distinct design identities, approached Vinithra Amarnathan, founder and chief interior designer of Weespaces, with a brief that was split down the middle; half-his and half-hers.
“Kausthuba loves traditional curves and wood elements that remind her of her 72-year-old ancestral home in the coffee estates of the Western Ghats where she grew up. Upen is an avid traveller and a bookworm who loves modern touches, clean lines, metal, rustic wood and cool colours. Their shared love of Greece is what ultimately harmonised our brief and helped meld their styles into a richly layered look,” says Amarnathan.

“The most rewarding aspect of the home is how we were able to turn some of the eyesores into real features. The dead column, for example, was transformed into what is now the main highlight of the area,” says Amarnathan.
Coming in from the front door, to the right of the foyer lies the formal living room, dominated by a cobalt upholstered sofa, tan armchairs and bursts of blue and brown. An abstract artwork diffuses the cleanness of the straight-lined aesthetic, lending a sense of fluidity to the pared-back shell.

The stone column acts as an anchor for the dining area, providing a shield of privacy from the foyer and living room.
Behind the stone column, a sweeping live-edge wooden dining table cuts a rustic presence, posing as an organic offset to the surrounding sable Windsor chairs. A bird cage pendant appears as a slender overhead accent, bathing the zone in a petite halo of light.

Beyond the dining area is the informal lounge, punctuated by pops of mustard, natural wood grains and Mediterranean motifs. Wooden roof beams, a live-edge, hairpin-legged coffee table, a Moroccan-print area rug and an antique-style tapestry conjure a boho, beachside vibe.

The kitchen lies to the left of the entryway, enlivened with a bold blue palette that recalls the deepest ocean blues of the Mediterranean. A blue-and-white patterned backsplash unfurls a calming canvas for the midnight-blue cabinetry, while burnished hardware and ochre sconces add a metallic sheen to the moody undertones.
A sleek breakfast counter stands guard to the side, marrying contemporary and classic sensibilities with black stools, a high-gloss counter and a trad custom wooden leg.
“We tore down the kitchen wall and opened up the window on the back wall to invite more natural light indoors. The kitchen was large enough to handle the bold infusions of colour and we balanced it by keeping all the other elements white or wooden,” says Amarnathan.

The winds of the old and the new collide in the master bedroom, located to the right of the living room. A wooden half-poster bed and complementary bench channel a colonial appeal that is effectively counterbalanced by modish chevron teak-veneered wardrobes to the side.
“The vintage landscape print atop the headboard ties in the colours of the space beautifully,” says Amarnathan.

A reading nook, comprising an olive velvet-upholstered wingback chair, a tripod floor lamp and geometric wall art, sits opposite the bed, offering a welcome breakaway for reading and relaxing.

Country florals, hushed colours and luminous corners characterise the guest bedroom. A foliated wallpaper injects visual variety into the light-toned shell, providing a fitting backdrop to the dark wooden bed.
“The scale of the pattern adds to the room’s volume without overwhelming it, especially since the colour scheme is dominated by whites and dark wood,” says Amarnathan.

The study-cum-library breathes a deep forest green, subtly cured by embellishments in monochrome and wood. Long wooden shelves adorn one wall, acting as a spiffy open library, while a white custom ladder desk defines the other side of the room.
“The study was designed as a little oasis for the husband who works extensively from home and reads voraciously. It also doubles as a den,” says Amarnathan.

“The home did not have a dedicated entryway, and the entrance opened into a large, generic space with a column planted in the middle,” recalls Amarnathan.
