The brief given by the clients to Swati Seraan, architect at By the Riverside, was to create a home that would showcase their collective love for traditional Indian antiques and crafts. Seraan says, “However, they didn’t want to stick to only the traditional approach and wanted their home to display traditional art in a contemporary setting with the correct balance.”
The final product is an aesthetic home replete with stunning sculptures, paintings and motifs reflecting the Indian arts and displayed to perfection in a sophisticated and modern setting, where four generations come together harmoniously.

A partition made of wooden frames holding slatted screens and swivelling panels of wood separates the living area from the TV room.
Seraan explains, “The idea of the separator comes from windows commonly seen in small villages in the countryside.” The partition brings a certain charm and an element of old-world design to the otherwise contemporary home.

The space is expansive and elongated, designed as an open plan consisting of the living room, a TV corner, the dining and kitchen.

A Ganesha carved in stone sits between the living and dining areas, posed against a floral-patterned wall similar to that in the foyer.
The white-topped, spindle-legged dining table is flanked by contemporary-style chairs, the entire setting illuminated by a traditional looking brass lamp.
The open kitchen lies just off the dining area, but out of sight from the living space. It is designed using a neutral colour palette that complements the wooden and rustic touch given by the furniture of the living and dining areas.
The balcony abuts the far end of the expansive space, allowing an easy transition between the indoors and the outdoors due to its angular placement; also, a favourite spot of the family and friends to hang out at.
A jhula brings a touch of quaint charm while the floor sports printed tiles. A durrie and traditional artefacts keep up the chosen aesthetic of the home.

The master bedroom is again part traditional, part contemporary: a four-poster bed represents the former and a coffered ceiling the latter. A red couch adds the requisite dose of colour in a room that does not receive much natural light.
The wooden floor adds a certain richness to the room that is accentuated by mirror-fronted wardrobes.
Since the client wanted study space in the bedroom, a corner of the room with a simple wooden ledge serves the purpose. Carved teak-wood doors show off their beautiful fretwork while concealing storage space, giving a traditional vibe to a modern cabinet system.
The mother’s room is done in an elegant combination of greenish- grey, white and shades of tan. The wainscoting is a decorative element in itself, adding great old-world elegance to the room.
The grandmother’s bedroom, Seraan says, “is a perfect combination of Indian heritage prints and modern solids, bridging the gap between olden times and modern trends.” Wall-length cupboards match the wainscoting on the walls, the solid colour anchoring the room.
The rich wooden flooring seen in other bedrooms is replicated here too. The dark headboard of the bed provides bold relief against the patterned wallpaper.
The daughter’s bedroom sports powder-pink polka-dotted wallpaper on one wall and a black-and-white mural on another, which adds childlike charm to the room. The dollhouse-style bed with a padded pink headboard would be the envy of every little girl.
Keeping the balance of colours is a white study table and shelves on the wall, creating a comfortable nook for scholarly pursuits.
