Hyderabad Houzz: A Modern Home With Traditional Twists & Accents
Oxide walls and a brass beehive installation are some of many standout elements in this home by Sona Reddy Studio
The homeowners wanted their second house, located in Gachibowli in Hyderabad, to offer a sense of comfort and rejuvenation. Adhering to this brief, Sona Reddy, principal architect at Sona Reddy Studio, created a retreat where traditional elements merge seamlessly with modern aesthetics; a home for the family to entertain and unwind.
Floor-to-ceiling windows (seen behind the sofa) and a skylight bathe this area in natural sunlight. Little brass bees cling to the walls of the rectangular recess of the skylight, a prelude to the main beehive installation in the dining room (not seen in this image).

Vernacular artefacts, hanging pendant lights and a patterned monochrome dresser enliven this space.
A colourful rug anchors the seating arrangement, which consists of a rustic centre table, a white sofa and mid-century chairs. The furniture is customised and curated to fit the visual palette of the area.

On the left of the entrance is the dining room with a wooden table by Viya Homes. “The backdrop of the dining room is a customised beehive installation, which is the pièce de résistance of the house. Made from brass, it forms an intriguing element that captures the conceptual impetus behind the space, a biophilic sentiment,” says Reddy. “A pink oxide staircase wall behind the installation adds colour to the entire installation.”

Facing the dining room is an open kitchen.
The kitchen gains colour and depth from the green marble that clads the backsplash and countertop. A kitchen island with handmade brass lattice or jali sides complements the jewel-green tones. The wooden cabinet doors feature woven cane panels.
An outdoor courtyard with a foot pool demarcates the informal and formal living areas.

Next to the courtyard is the formal living area. A tufted turquoise sofa lends a pop of colour to the neutral palette of this space. An intricately carved panel forms a distinctive backdrop for the sofa and accentuates the traditional vibe.
A staircase opposite the courtyard leads to the master bedroom.
Asymmetrically spaced recessed wall lights illuminate this corner. The brass plant holders add a hint of glamour to this spot.
The master bedroom is on the left of the upstairs corridor. Awash in tones of blue, a four-poster bed takes the centre stage in this room. The grey marble floor and bison-board ceiling create a warm and inviting interior.
On the second floor, a skylight frames the space above another foot pool while expansive windows bring the outdoors in and bathe the area with natural light.
Walls with metallic accents draw visual interest and bring in subtle glamour.
On the second floor is the entertainment zone where floral cement tile flooring complements the eclectic furniture, artworks and souvenirs. The pendant lights draw attention to the ceiling.
