Bangalore Houzz: A Home of Traditional Aesthetics & Modern Decor
Houseof9design gives a refreshed, modish look to this home while keeping its classic charm
“The renovation of this apartment was challenging. The homeowners wanted a home that would amalgamate vernacular design elements and contemporary decor. We had to work with a few existing pieces of furniture and somehow bring the old to life while adding voguish accents and, in the end, marry them all together,” says Nain Belliappa, principal designer & founder Houseof9design.
An intricately carved settee or daybed adds a bit of throwback character and a casual feel to the space.

On the right side of the entrance corridor is the dining room. The designer breathes new life into a worn-out crockery cabinet by painting it and replacing the glass inserts with a wicker weave from a local artisan. Next to the cabinet is an accent wall with blue-and-white china artefacts.
While the pendant lamp above the dining table infuses an element of industrial decor into a traditional setting, the floral wallpaper accentuates the old-world charm.

A balcony with wicker furniture for additional seating abuts the living room.
A 20-foot-long corridor, swathed in shades of cool mauve, leads to the bedrooms. Artwork, masks and an antique mirror adorn the walls, giving the space an eclectic vibe.
“The master bedroom has an unconventional setting, with the bed’s back to the window – that’s how our client preferred it when we played around with the layout,” says Belliappa.
The cane headboard and wooden flooring, flooded in natural light from the expansive windows, infuse a sense of warmth in this space. A rocking chair and a mirror in a carved frame give continuity to the vintage theme.
A colourful board-and-batten feature wall and origami wallpaper are the highlights of the kids’ room. The interplay of patterns and textures gives a zany feel to the bedroom.

“This is a classic transitional home doused in warmth, subdued colours and strong textures. Our inspiration for the home came from our clients’ exquisite furniture pieces and their family heirlooms, especially the art and artefacts,” says Belliappa.
The main door opens into the living room, which has a modern layout, dotted with ethnic pieces. Re-upholstered in two kinds of fabric, traditional teakwood chairs instil an ethnic charm while the tufted beige sofa and custom green velvet-upholstered chairs (a new addition to this area) are modish.
A cream rug with subtle motifs anchors the seating arrangement and imbues a sense of muted elegance. The wall behind the sofa serves as a backdrop for paintings and creates a layered vignette.
