A Celebrity Couple's Chennai Home is a Melange of Decor Styles
Designed by 1405 Design Studio, this eclectic home fits its high-profile homeowners like a glove
Ashwath Narayanan and Divya Khullar, cofounders and principal architects at 1405 Design Studio, were given the task of designing a home that had many zones – each had to have its own visual and spatial mood, yet everything had to come together cohesively. “We chalked out a design plan where each level shines on its own,” says Kullar.
From the front door, one steps into the foyer, where marble with inlaid metal in a minimal geometric pattern adorns the floor, setting a cool, luxe vibe punctuated with warm pops of colour.

The foyer leads to the main seating area, where a tan sofa and wood-framed walls add warmth to the ambience. Inlaid with brass, the Staturio marble wall complements the flooring, and combines with the mirrored glass surfaces to give the room a luxurious feel apt for its purpose.

An intricate wood and brass screen segregates the living area. Behind the screen is a door with traditional ashtalakshmi motifs above it, which leads to the puja room.

An interplay of wood, glass and metal continues the design narrative into the dining room, while shifting to a warmer palette.
The custom dining table with its black Marquina marble tabletop gets a pop of colour from the rust chairs. A cascading cluster of pendant light adds drama and layering to the voluminous space. On the right side of the table is a concealed door that leads to the kitchen.

The glass wall’s inlay pattern is mirrored on the cutlery console design as well. The geometric patterns tie the decor with that of the sitting room.
In the kitchen, the dark mirrored cabinetry at right accommodates the built-in appliances and gives this area a sleek look. A patterned monochrome Moroccan tile backsplash gives a touch of pattern to offset its solidity and draws visual interest. The wooden cabinets and cement finish flooring soften the ambience.
The bar lounge on the ground floor is reminiscent of Art Deco visuals and graphics with bold motifs and an eclectic colour palette. Grey tufted sofas and furnishing from Good Earth accentuate the opulence of this room.

The console with geometrical inlays adds to the storage in the bar. Teak wood continues on the ceiling, creating an inviting and warm space.

“On the upper floor, the informal lounge is the family’s sanctum to put their feet up, let their hair down and unwind,” says Narayanan. This eclectic room has a retro feel, with an interesting interplay of colours and patterns. Teak flooring anchors the seating arrangement, comprising a green sectional sofa and tropical print chairs. Next to the expansive window, a funky love seat rests against the backdrop of a foliage-inspired wallpaper.

An L-shaped sofa and vibrant pouffes in the second-floor entertainment lounge create a cosy and comfortable retreat. A candelabrum-style chandelier instils a vintage vibe. The wall-to-wall windows provide a seamless connection with the outdoors, adding to the expansiveness of the space.
Industrial decor rules this corner. An unfinished brick wall with black pipes, filament bulbs and film memorabilia backs the seating arrangement of bar stools with metal tube legs. The black charred wood bar unifies the design scheme.
