Mirrors can complement the decor of a room, double as wall art, become a charming centrepiece and greatly enhance the mood of a space. But you can’t put these looking glasses just anywhere. The trick lies in picking a mirror that’s out of the ordinary yet easy on the eye, and placing it at the right spot. Still confused? We tell you how and where to accent your house with mirrors…

A wall of mirrors
Mirror paneling is a great way to make a small room look big. As shown in the picture, you can opt for a wall-to-wall sectional mirror that consists of many small mirrors in different shapes. Or you can pick a plain mirror and get it framed to match the decor of your room. In this entrance, a complementing ottoman and a freestanding lamp-chandelier has been placed in front of the mirror to deck up a niche that makes a great first impression for any visitor walking in.

Corner clusters
There’s a thin line between cluttering a wall and bringing out its beauty. Take a cue from the corner wall in the picture where mirrors of different shapes and sizes have been hung up. You can hit the chor bazaars (flea markets) to find your perfect assortment or engage a carpenter. Either way, I assure you, there will be beautiful order in this seemingly chaotic arrangement.

A heritage haven
You can also consider enhancing the entrance or an open area of your home with an oversized or a wall-to-wall ornate mirror that has an intricately-carved wooden frame. These traditional mirrors go well with traditional decor, of course, but they can also work wonders when contrasted in a modern contemporary setting. Complete the look by adding pots or planters; place them around the mirror to add more warmth to the space.

Reinvented bathroom
Bathroom mirrors don’t necessarily need to be staid and functional. You can subtly spice up a bathroom with a wall mirror that is a bit unusual – like this one constructed with reclaimed driftwood. See how the wood treatment lifts the whole place and adds a kick of glamour to the otherwise all white and neutral space.

Full circles
In this space, chic circular mirrors in steel frames have been teamed with a clean-lined console to create a pretty corner. You can place potted plants and ferns or vases of fresh flowers near them to bring in colour, texture and charm.

Not on the wall
You don’t have to go by the book when it comes to mirrors. Standing a mirror in a corner instead of hanging it can be a good call. Just make sure you ‘rest’ the mirror securely in a place where there’s ample light and space. This bathroom is a unique space with a full length mirror against the wall. The freed-up grey wall over the vanity helps accentuate the yellow of the furniture piece and the blue of the mirror frame.

Curve call
Consider complementing a high ceiling with a faux arched window wall mirror, as shown in the picture. For the frame of the mirror, you could choose a subtle colour and distressed finish. In this space, the mirror has been left free of any additional embellishments, to make it the highlight of the space.

Window to the world
Give your bare wall a makeover without much of a fuss. In this picture, a mirror divided into squares by thin frames acts like an artwork just above the sofa. Not only will it make your room look bigger, it will also make your space more intriguing, as it seems to offer a view out of a window.
