Designer: Ace Associates
Location: Anand, Gujarat
Size: 790 square metres (8504 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: As a home inhabited by multiple generations, the brief given was to achieve a balance between the contemporary and the traditional while “tailoring each room to echo the personalities of its occupants”.
Wall design: A lick of white paint on a raw brick wall transports the young resident of this bedroom from the rustic countryside to the Mediterranean. Shades of the sea combined with a distressed wood deck complete the coastal vibe.
Design tip: An exposed brick expanse makes for a dramatic statement; and with differing treatments it can run the gamut of styles from country to industrial, from coastal to contemporary.

Size: 115 square metres (1240 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: The very sociable homeowners wanted their home redesigned to have “the right balance of comfort and sophistication” and to reflect warmth amidst modernity.
Wall design: Nothing could have matched these requirements better than panels of thin-ribbed wood that exude a luxurious vibe and yet are homely. The wood panelling serving as the backdrop of this dining area makes an effective design statement with its detailed grooves and the thickness of the structure, while the uneven top border accentuates its architectural shape.

Designer: Studio Nishita Kamdar
Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra
Size: 107 square metres (1150 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: While the owners desired their home to serve as a comfort zone that reflected their personalities, the designer’s task was to achieve this through impactful design and planning given the compact size of the apartment.
Wall design: A sweeping wall, clad in veneer and wooden flutes, runs almost the length of the apartment, discreetly concealing duct windows, the puja room and storage units. The full-height panelling could have looked overwhelming in the small space but the decorative grooves prove to be an aesthetic distraction.
Design tip: Modern wood panellings that are currently available feature better mounting systems, improved edges and custom sizing, and are therefore easier to install, irrespective of place and space.

3. 3D effect
Designer: Jannat Vasi Interior Design
Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra
Size: 300 square metres (3230 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: The designers were given carte blanche to implement their own creative ideas in the apartment makeover, with the sole emphasis being on space and storage.
Wall design: The space aspect of it was achieved by installing a 3D-effect wall covering that enhances the impression of the room’s depth. Juxtaposed with a curved veneered surface on the other side of the room, the combination provides an extra dimension to the living room.

Designer: Quirk Studio
Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra
Size: 240 square metres (2583 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: The young owners wanted a clutter-free home with modern sensibilities and clean lines.
Wall design: The handmade tiles that clad the living room wall emit a 3D effect, exuding a slightly vintage yet modern vibe. According to the designer, “the wall is highlighted with a special focus light that creates an interplay of shadows and colour,” and also heightens the interplay between the lines on the wall and those on the floor.
Design tip: While the 3D effect can be achieved either through wallpaper or tiles, the pattern must be directly proportional to the distance between the wall and the observer for maximum effect; that is, the shorter the distance the smaller the print or design, and vice versa.

4. Cement oxide
Designer: Dipen Gada & Associates
Location: Vadodara, Gujarat
Size: 230 square metres (2476 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: The brief to the designers was to keep to a decor that was simple and subtle while allowing for style blended with functionality.
Wall design: The use of cement oxide (or raw concrete) in most parts of the house gives a sense of continuity as well as a sense of vastness. To avoid the monotony of large stretches of concrete, the designers have engraved walls (and ceilings, too) with geometric patterns, while clean-lined furniture in wooden accents adds a touch of warmth.

Designer: Studio Course
Location: Surat, Gujarat
Size: 500 square metres (5382 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: The owners’ requirements were clear – to use sustainable materials to create “something that would endure over time rather than merely pander to passing trends”.
Wall design: Concrete exudes a sense of timelessness; also, it is energy efficient – which made it a good choice to be used extensively through a large part of the house. In the kitchen, the vast palette of cement oxide, or concrete, offers a counterfoil to other natural materials such as granite and timber, creating a warm, homogeneous look.
Design tip: Concrete can be customised for colours by adding pigments, the most common being the old-fashioned but always popular red.

Designer: Studio PKA
Location: Pavana, Maharashtra
Size: 950 square metres (10,226 square feet)
Homeowners’ brief: Situated as it is in the lap of the Sahyadri mountains, the nature-loving owners wanted their weekend home to “not only capture the essence of the place but also inspire, delight and satiate their creative endeavours”.
Wall design: There is something about an exposed brick wall that immediately conveys a feeling of warmth and character. It can add texture to a large blank space – the way it does to this imposing stairwell in the heart of this house. The monotony that might come from expanses of pure brick is broken up by bands of white cement, even as the earthy hue segues into the shades of the surrounding landscape.
