White is ‘safe’ for the ceiling; but wouldn’t it be exciting to live a tad dangerously sometimes? If you are willing to step out of your comfort zone, here are some great colours and designs for painted ceilings that can add oodles of character to even the most staid of rooms.
1. Apply geometry to the living room ceiling and you’ll never be afraid of the subject again. The criss-cross patterns on this ceiling draw the eye upwards and on towards the fabulous view outside.
2. A dark-grey ceiling has a certain grandeur and loftiness. It accentuates the height even more in this elegant dining room of graceful proportions and large windows.
3. Take your white kitchen to the next level with this bright idea. The cheerful lemon-yellow painted ceiling acts as an accent wall and warms things up considerably in this cooking space.
4. A jewel-like deep blue adds a hefty dose of sophistication to this dining room, especially when coupled with silver and white. Take it up a notch by using high-gloss paint to reflect natural light by day and candlelight by night. This is a great example of how to use painted ceilings for small rooms, especially when the accompanying wall colour (even though a bit dark) provides as an element of respite and contrast.
5. In a teen boy’s room, the custom splatter-painted ceiling takes centre stage while tying the room’s colours together.
6. When selecting a ceiling colour, take a cue from the textiles and decorative accessories in the room. The blue that’s repeated on the ceiling and furnishings creates visual rhythm and allows the eye to move through the room without any interruptions.
7. Create a focal point in your ceiling by painting it a bold, contrasting shade compared to the walls. The bright orange ceiling, resting on white walls, accentuates the height of this kitchen but also draws it together.
8. This painted ceiling design displays an imitation sky, complete with a World War-II plane, enough to gladden the heart of any little wannabe-flier. The ceiling colour has been used as the point of departure for choosing the palette for the furniture and textiles in the bedroom.

9. The bold navy ceiling is an unexpected touch in this elegant living room – it adds to the sumptuousness, at the same time making the large space seem more intimate and cosy.
10. A cerulean-blue ceiling puts the stunning light fixture centre stage in this open-concept home. The blue finds echo in the rich Moroccan-inspired wallpaper and the designer chair. The glossy paint reflects every play of light and shadow across the ceiling, adding an interesting new dimension to the room and expanding its visual space.
11. Glossy black paint can make high ceilings feel lower without becoming oppressive. A contrasting medallion and light fixture are set off to advantage against this dark background. Pale walls with matching crown moulding balance and control the effect of the dark ceiling.
12. The bold stripes help get over the awkwardness of an asymmetrically pitched ceiling by creating a cheerful circus tent or marquee kind of effect, distracting from the uneven pitch. It is a child’s room, so this trick works well.
13. Painting the ceiling a contrasting colour to the architectural details on or around it is a fantastic design feature. The dark grey of the vaulted ceiling, in this case, is broken up by the triangular white frames created by the rafters and joists, seeming to lower the high ceiling.
14. This room illustrates a nice trick for when you use a bright hue – put it on the ceiling and one wall. You can use two different shades from the same family – here, it is red and orange. It looks less jarring than painting one wall only, and it helps lower the ceiling, creating a snug and comfortable ambience that’s perfect for the sunroom.
15. Painting the walls and ceiling a bright, cheery colour such as this chartreuse green adds energy and interest to any room – besides making a low ceiling seem a mile high.
16. Give white a makeover by painting it in high gloss for a super-sophisticated look; plus, it creates an illusion of endlessness. If a ceiling like the one here is too dramatic for your taste, use a semigloss paint instead.
This room is transformed into a jewel box by the metallic ceiling, which matches the gold motif wallpaper perfectly. The barrel-vaulted ceiling culminates in the centre with a drop-down chandelier, further emphasising the richness of the space. The shimmery gold paint adds not only glitz but also height because of its reflective quality.
