We have 52” and it’s comfortable for two. With dishwasher open someone can still walk by. I just checked and the end of our island is actually 48” to fridge. If I had more space I would add it here
I use 42” as min walkways. You should be fine and it works with your layout. Island size looks good. I usually can find loads of issues but this looks good to me.
Thanks everyone! And just realizing the dimensions of the island are a bit hard to read - island length is 8’3” and width is 4’ 3 3/4”. Everything think that width of an island is ok? Not too wide?
The only suggestion I have is to omit the small bar sink and put a prep sink on the island where you have the recycling. It can serve both areas, but will be most useful on the island.
I agree with mama goose. Move your bar sink and make it a larger prep sink. Don't make your island any bigger... being walkways, 48" is pretty much the minimum you'd want.
If you can't remove the post I personally would move the island towards the kitchen table area and incorporate the post into the end of the island instead of having the small little space between the two.
I agree with removing the pony walls by island seating; as is you will not get comfortable seating for 4 people. With open space at the ends of the overhang it is a much more accommodating and flexible setup.
I think the drawing may be a bit misleading, there aren’t any pony walls, just an overhang on the island for seating and the island width is 3’3” + 1’ 3/4” - but agree with your comments that the openness will be comfortable! Thanks for your comments!
Add s prep sink (with disposal if you use one) on the island. Then you’re not prepping food by your dirty dishes, etc. And if you use filtered water, put an RO faucet there.
I think the plan is perfect. The walk ways-- flow dictates the sides of the island and the 4' distance to the range is good. The refrigerator, not usually ideal at the end of a cabinet run, but it is the only possible location & can be loaded/unloaded directly to the island. The "pony" walls are most likely under the countertop and simple frame the look of a wider island while hiding the stools. The sink location depends on your personal use preference. It is nice to have a wide open island area, but also nice to have the sink at the end as suggested to utilize while prepping or clean up.
I am planning almost the exact same layout as yours. I will have 48" between range and island and 42" between refrigerator and island. I will have a 4x9 island. The feedback you have received is encouraging.
Thank you @Bedford Falls Builders Inc! So helpful. And yes, I totally see the appeal of having a prep sink IN the island but do also like the thought of it being totally free and clear of anything - so something certainly worth pondering. And yes exactly re: fridge. We tried to find another spot for it but just wouldn't fit anywhere else. The only other spot we could put it is where the range is, but from a viewplain perspective I'd rather look at the range than the fridge when sitting at the island...
