You have a great opportunity to go eclectic. So using very modern and colourful elements for the kitchen - modern storage cannisters, a vase, lights, toaster, even mixer, you start to introduce shocks of colour and shape that jar with the expectations in a traditional kitchen. Ka_kamakshy interior architect , Did you check with your contractor why he thinks it will fall down. May be he hasn't done it earlier or he doesnt want to do it. It is very much feasible to clad the walls with marble/granite/ other finishes.

Wouldn't ceramic tiles wood finish, laid in planks of 6" x 24" solve the problem? Not my go-to choice though. Another option would be to use texture paint (with larger granules) in a deep chocolate colour
