Kitchen cooker splash back or tile all around?

Hi, we have had our kitchen fitted with the quartz worktop and upstand priced in. Our dilemma is should we tile all the way around and follow the worktop with the height just up to the bottom of the extractor or do split it by putting a cooker splash back in the same colour of the worktop or in glass to match the cooker hood?

The worktop will be silestone blanco (just off white with small bits of beige).

Suggestions are welcome including colours of tiles etc.

I think those tiles will be overdoing it. You have a lovely modern streamlined kitchen so I'd keep it simple. Upstands and possibly a splashback but only behind the hob to keep the wall clean. Definitely no tiles.

Thanks!!! That looks lovely...!! Unfortunately the white counter wont work for the kitchen im planning - abundant turmeric in Indian cooking precludes any soft colour.. Went out today and got myself a black countertop with white veins (I HATE granite), and am now planning white shutters to go with it instead of the grey... Any other thoughts? Am not mulling over the backsplash...

Hi, Rajendra, there are three way of doing, firstly what you have chosen is go minimalist with all white, here you will have to add colors by decorating wall or adding a symbolic decor or art mural/painting which will bring you a joy while working. but if you neglect the importance of art work, the kitchen will be boring to use after 6 months of use. as we enjoy spices in our food , so do our eyes enjoy a sense of catchy colors too. second will be adding a contrast in with back splash with a back painted tempered glass or corian, this woks wonders. third, with the color of your choice, which will be permanent in the cabinate, but gives you a fresh sense to the whole kitchen, little color here and there will attract your eye and you'll appreciate your own choice/selection again and again.

Hello there, You could scoop them out with a flat trowel and scrap cement backing with that as well. But it won't be much of a success and you will lose around 30-40 %. You could DIY broken tiles mosaics as an art ; frame and fix it on the wall itself with an appropriate glue. Or search for other DIYs on youtube. You could replace them with decals as described @cornerstone studio , but there's a catch ; high heat areas could deform and de-glue the decals as well. I agree that heavily patterned tiles fight with the clean lines of this kitchen.
I would have an upstand all around the kitchen (same as worktop) but make it taller behind the hob.
If you love the tiles consider a plain wall opposite the kitchen to balance the room.

Thanks for responses so far, so we will look to extend the worktop up to the bottom of the cooker hood matching the width of the hood (120cm). What we are unsure of is what we could to put along the rest of the walls running along the worktop to protect from everyday splashes from food prep etc? I

No need for anything. A wipeable matt paint will be practical and avoids the fussiness of tiles

I think you'd live to regret those tiles. I think you need a contrasting colour - maybe lime green, but just behind the hob.

My kitchen is much smaller than yours so I had it done in a warm cream with a red tiled splashback behind the hob, just to add a pop of colour.

Just Google kitchen splashbacks for ideas.

Agree with Jonathan, but would varnish the painted surface by the hob. I've done just that and its great, and easily changeable in time if another colour attracts, and reason to be really bold!

Hi, Using coloured glass splashbacks or decorative laminated glass finishes would compliment the beautiful environment .

Hi,

like in the above comment I would consider a glass splashback which would add to the modern kitchen which you have. I would avoid using patterned tiles as the room would feel too busy especially with the grained units.

A glass splashback would look great. I used upstands and just painted above but used a greeny coloured glass splashback behind the hob, not too much of a colour statement and doesn't detract from the clean lines of the kitchen.

Absolutely love the kitchen but the tiles do not seem to compliment it. I agree with other postings - a simple SS splash back would be enough with the upstands in the same material as the worktop. Please post a photo when you have finished.

We agree with a lot of the above comments. Tiles may be a little much and distract from your beautiful kitchen. Maybe just a splashback behind the hob would compliment your kitchen. Let us know if you need colour inspiration!

We vote tiles! If it was my kitchen (and mostly because I'm a messy cook) I would be inclined to tile (or glass backsplash) anywhere that might need to be wiped down-e.g. behind cooker, along any counters where I might be doing any food prep. This gives you plenty of options-you could tile behind cooker and counters in metro/subway tiles, but be careful as it could look busy with the granite and wood grain of kitchen-it will depend on the grout. Alternatively, you could use big clean glossy tiles like this marble look above.
