It is expanded metal lath baskets hung on furring strips filled with native soil. The irrigation is drip, winding through the baskets. The system was designed to recirculate through a drainage channel at the bottom.

Wonderful and thanks! We've read thru Patrick Blanc's book on vert gardens and were wondering if you used geo cloth as the method of holding the plantings in place. We find your application stunningly beautiful! Do you have any drawbacks to share? ...or to be aware of?
My advise is to build a test wall in miniature with the system and plants and exposure you plan to have. We tried 3 systems and in the end, designed our own. Depending on what your specific climate is and what kind of plants you use, you will learn how well your set up is going to work before committing to something bigger. We were working with natives from the area. They didn't like some systems because their roots couldn't stretch out enough and simply wouldn't stay put in others.
