Reworking my floor plan
I'm in the process of buying this house and I want it to be more functional. I don't like have multiple living and dining spaces. What I would like to do is have the dining room in the current family room (open to kitchen) and use the whole dining area/living room as a big living room. I need help with the furniture layout in the new living room. We have Bible study meetings with 15-20 people very often and would like to have generous seating space for everyone to gather and feel comfortable in conversation.

Comments (20)Mohammad. I understand your program. You may be lost in the details at the moment. Please do follow and trust the advice given here by all these people. You are about to embark on a reasonably expensive journey. Get professional help with someone who you can sit down at a table and brainstorm with them your ideas and intentions. There are Architects and there are professional building designers who are members of the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD) who are well versed in projects such as yours. I personally love a design challenge. After 38 years designing homes and special use buildings I enjoy this type of challenge the most. Comments (11)Hello, Could you please mail me the exact measurement layout of the living room, kitchen and dry balcony area. I would suggest you to swipe the dining area with the living area as it will give an open space at the entrace. This will require a little bit of civil work if you are okay with that. Design Idea : The dining area can be made with wall mounted ledge on one side and 3 chairs on the other side. A 3seater sofa can be placed on the common wall between the kitchen and exisiting dining area with tv unit on the opposite side, this will restrain the view of the kitchen when guests visits. Nothing to criticize but a little thinking could make a real good plan for egl. 1) The hall could accomodate the dining area as well. 2) A single stair is sufficient enough to fulfill the requirements. depending upon where it is placed. 3) A lounge on the first floor would add the charm to the upper floor and a large balcony may be if possible. 4) Some vegetation in the interior could make it lively. 5) I f a small courtyard if not a hindrance into the central area can make it more inclined towards nature since it would be good for light and ventilation. There are a lot of other small things possible depending upon the requirements and the structural probability.There doesnt seem to be the column and beam overlay over the plan which would be also helpful in designing. 8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoWe have friends that have large gathering often. They have three sofas in a U shape. That seats a lot of folks and great for conversation. Comfy also!
Instead of this type, do ones with a bench seat, not individual cushions. Seat more that way!

I would take your plan to a furniture store and tell them your needs. I think now that a large sectional without a lot of separate cushions would work well in that one "dining room" corner. Then have a lot of extra rolling ottomans to bring over.

8 years agoFor the bay window, you could see a local cabinet maker about some seating there, or talk to furniture store about small sofa or a long bench/ottoman as I posted above. Maybe a smaller group may need to "break off" for a different discussion.
Something like this may work for you. Sort of reminds me of your floorplan. Notice how the one sofa is on wheels. That would give your some flexibility.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoRemoving that wall would just promote "open concept" and isn't necessary. The other changes to the entry and den could be saved up for and done as you have the budget. New light fixtures would be a major help in giving you an updated appearance right now, if you can budget for those. People usually don't care to sit elbow-to-elbow, and our Bible studies are done around a "U" of folding tables so there's room to spread out Bibles, study aids, and laptops. If you can dedicate the den to the study group's use, consider purchasing three to four folding tables and chairs that can be set up there if you like to have a table surface for the studies. Then furnish the living room with a round table and four chairs in the bay window - a family game table, if you will. I'd use a pair of 3-seat sofas facing each other with four chairs so they form a square with a large coffee table in the center.

8 years agoHere's the size of your den and this is how we set up 8' tables and chairs with the study leader at a round table in the center which is optional.Seats 21 people.
