Difficult to say, but you can obtain grey stain samples online which are water based and test it on a piece of board. Do you have one section you can take up easily so you can try it on the back perhaps? You would need to sand it back though I imagine first.
Stain wise, I think it's 'manns floor stain' you need which they do for different floor types and it shows you pictures of the result.
Got mine from 'www.wood-finishes-direct.com who were good.
Ps it does make a huge difference to the colour and effect when you test it on a sanded piece vs a non sanded piece so make sure it's smooth when you try it.
Our suggestion is, do not try because whatever you do will be worse. You can damage the wood flooring this way, then it will be hard to restore to original condition.
Woodcraft Flooring has oiled wood flooring by hand for 30 years. We combine colours and stains we have tried before to make Mahogany lighter this did not work and therefore we had to restore the floor.
You can restore the floor back to new that is what I suggest to do if your floor is looking old or in a bad state.
