ORGANIC AND NATURAL DESIGN A well thought out and organized naturalistic style garden design and landscaping compliment the natural terrain of the land and enhance the general theme of the home. In this project, we use natural granite boulders for the fountain accent art and for creating a very natural but dramatic look of the circular driveway island landscaping. We curved boxwood hedge around the existing driveway and soften the garden with hydrangeas, dogwoods, and groundcovers.

Railroad tie steps. This active family needed to overhaul this large property but didn't know where to start. "It's like three acres of boring dirt and weeds", said my client. The steeply sloped property did indeed present unique challenges with ever-present voracious deer, the need for erosion control and bank stabilization, large areas that required planting while still considering water conservation, and the need for beautification and modernization to tie into the aesthetic of the newly renovated home. Concurrently, safety and access to all parts of the property were a consideration. Landscaping goals were accomplished through careful plant selection and judicious use of retaining walls in various styles throughout the property. Generous railroad tie steps were used on sloping side yards. The landscaped portions converge gracefully with the existing oak woodland. Children can play and hide in many fun spots, while my client's elderly grandmother can safely walk around.

Because of the sloping terrain the backyard was always swampy and mushy. Improving the site to enable water to flow through the yard and infiltrate into the ground was a top priority. The drainage issues were put to rest by building a creek bed from real river rocks. Bonus – when the stream bed is dry it adds a Zen element to this already tranquil backyard. The clients used this garden as a place for relaxation as well as entertaining. They also had a dog and wanted a defined area in a part of the garden in order for her to be able to have free reign. A fence with a gate separated part of the garden in which their dog was able to play and allowed for her to be kept their when required. There were already two decked areas, one of which was unsafe and in need of replacement. The patio that was adjacent to the house was uneven in places and required relaying. This gave the opportunity to square off the previously diagonal shape of the patio and to create more room for entertaining. Raised sleeper borders were introduced, which were in keeping with the existing sleepers used elsewhere in the garden. These were then planted with architectural evergreen Phormiums, Libertia and Polypodium vulgare which were then complemented with Deschampsia, Heleniums, Rudbeckias, Achilleas, Kniphofias, Geums, Crocosmia, Heuchera and Geraniums to provide seasonal interest with splashes of colour. In the spring, Tulips, Narcissi, Crocus and Alliums will start the season off. The clients had an existing water feature which they wished to re-use, which was incorporated into one of the raised borders, close to the lower decked area and enabled them to enjoy the sound of it whilst relaxing in this area. Lighting was also installed to enhance specific features of the garden and extend use of the garden well into the evening.
