This Master Bathroom's Design Speaks of Five-Star Luxury

One enters the bathroom through a hallway that features custom upper wood panels painted in New York State of Mind blue from Benjamin Moore. The panels have a decorative relief the homeowner gold-leafed herself.

Past the hallway, a vanity built into an alcove makes a luxurious spot for primping. It features a marble countertop and two columns of marble shelves.

The design team specified a honed finish on the hexagon-shaped marble floor tiles to make them less slippery when wet. Radiant floor heating keeps feet warm during Massachusetts winters. When exiting the shower, one can grab a toasty bath towel off the arched heated towel rack.
The designers had the team at RemodelWerks construct the vanities’ beveled marble counters. Recessed medicine cabinets provide more storage.

The owners picked up the idea for these rug-like inlaid marble tiles from a hotel in Paris. “The marble rugs come in a solid premade piece, so we had to cut the hexagon tiles around it,” Kupstas says.
The 8-by-5-foot shower features marble hexagon tiles on the floor and 3-by-5-inch marble subway tiles on the walls and ceiling. Three marble shelves in the corner hold shampoos and soaps.

An oval freestanding Kohler tub features air jets for a spa-like experience. “Before, you needed a built-in tub to get spa jets. This provides a similar experience for freestanding tubs,” Kupstas says.

Bathroom at a Glance
Who lives here: A jet-setting couple with four kids
Location: Shrewsbury, Massachusetts
Size: 23.2 square meters (about 250 square feet)
Designer: Joseph Kupstas of Emily’s Interiors
The people who live here are avid travellers who love to stay in grand hotels. Converting a guest bedroom into a master bathroom provided the chance to bring home the luxurious feel and world-class amenities they enjoy abroad.
When they were starting the design process, designer Joseph Kupstas says, one of the homeowners “sent me photo of the bathroom in the Paris hotel where she was staying. I told her, ‘There’s a whole lot of marble in that bathroom,’ and she said, ‘Yes, and I want all of it.’ ” Kupstas and team didn’t let her down. The new master bath features enough marble to cover the floors, walls, baseboards, sinks, shelves and shower surround.
