Our bathrooms are always smaller than we would ideally like, but they are a great place to employ niches. The scope of work is less (because of the compact space) but the result achieved can be big. Though we allot the tiniest space to the bathrooms in the house, they turn out to be perhaps the only area where we actually get some real alone time. Why not turn this private space into a blissful retreat? Why not take that extra step and put in details that can make this space stylish? Here are some ideas on how you can go about it.
Mission Tile West Showrooms
1. Glitz with mirror insets
Punctured niches in a solid wall are a perfect place for bathroom mirrors; you can tile them boldly and highlight with soft, indirect lighting to create a sublime mood. The mirrors could be slightly projected so as to give a floating effect.

2. Convert your window into a niche
If you have a fixed window in your bathroom, you can cover it with etched glass and treat it like a niche; you can even add glass shelves if you wish. The translucent glass floods the area with natural light and contrasts very well with the tiled surface.

3. Bring in bright hues
Refresh your space by making your niche a centre of attraction. Just spice it up with bright bolts of colour; they stand apart in a neutral tile setting. This is a good way to bring colour to your toilets.

4. Accessorise the walls
Bring in a good touch of artistry – create an element of interest by adding beautiful accessories or perhaps a piece of sculpture to your walls.

5. Get creative with the shape
Won’t it be stunning if a decorative niche could be carved out in the walls during the construction phase? If you can pull this off in the early phases, then there is nothing like it. Consider the alcove above. You could further highlight this space by using jaalis or stained tiles.

6. Invest in good lighting
To make a bathroom more striking, add LED lights to the back of the mirror. This layered depth adds to the stylised look of the space. Also consider other niches to highlight with focussed but dim lights.

7. Store up the amenities in an old niche
This is a classic example how a niche can be such an ideal place to stack bath accessories. Add shelves and voila! Simple details add so much value and can make the space feel well-planned and clutter free.
8. Introduce punctures
If you are getting your bathroom remodelled, consider building in a series of square punctures. Accentuating these with contrasting tiles can impart a very modern look to the bathroom. If you want to recharge your spirits and destress, create that spa effect by introducing dim lighting and by adding flowers and aroma candles.

9. Tile up for effect
Consider using handcrafted or accent tiles in the niche. This will instantly add more drama to the space. Make sure the tiles for the niche go with the rest of the colour palette.

10. Create a continuous alcove
A long continuous niche is such a treat – just integrate it with the tiles. It subtly brings in such a sense of depth. There is so much you can do to accessorise it and don’t forget the extra space you get to store/display your favourite bath amenities.
