6 Personality-Filled Bedrooms for Older Children
Get inspired by these smart and sassy spaces to plan your tween's room with loads of style
No matter how young your children are, they are moving towards their teenage years – when the cuddly, amenable little things turn to individuals, very aware of the world around them, with their own views and tastes, likes and dislikes. Designing a room for the in-between transition years, when they are tweens (kids 8-12 years old), can be tricky, as you have to please both the child-that-was and the teenager-to-come. A tween’s room should reflect their personality; it should be a room they feel comfortable in. It helps if it is designed to allow a change in looks and purpose with minimal alterations, in the years to come. So get started. But before you do, don’t forget to make them an integral part of the designing decisions. Here are stylish spaces to inspire you.
2. This room sports beige-grey walls and wooden flooring, which have a vibe that it is open to adapting to a new decor style, if needed later. The use of blue, green and yellow brings splashes of cheer to the room. The study table on the left allows for sufficient storage and display, while the bed unit forms a cosy sleeping zone. The arrangement leaves a large area open for floor games.
I like the use of a spotlight lamp, which adds a grown-up, modern, mid-twentieth-century touch to the space.

3. This bedroom is a calm retreat that the tween can enjoy after a tiring day at school, well into their teenage years. The wallpaper, curtains and soft lighting all contribute to a sense of serenity and calm, while touches of energising orange keep things lively.

4. A more grown-up style defines most of this double-height bedroom. A short flight of stairs leads to the mezzanine study area featuring a dramatic back-lit ceiling design. It makes for a delightful eyrie that would draw the scholar to their books.
The lower level holds an interesting reinterpretation of a kids’ bunk-bed, which is set apart from the smart dresser and cupboards. The bed can replaced with a more adult model later, if necessary, without disturbing the rest of the built-in furnishing.

5. The decals on the wall express the tweens’ love for travel, and when their interests turn to other subjects, the decals can be peeled off to make way for other expressions of personality. The room is a simple white space, where the accessories and the deep hues from the fabrics inject an electric vibrancy into the quiet decor. Just like the decals, the light fixtures and furnishings can be be easily changed as tastes change.

6. I personally love this well-fitted room: it has such zany energy. The feature wall with alphabet graphics, the comfy beds, the dedicated workstations with the open overhead shelves make this a fun room. A breakout area with a swing chair in the balcony is a cool spot for hanging out. What gives depth and spirit to all of this are the pops of colour, restrained but impactful.

Small additions, such as the wall clock and the offbeat light fixture, bring a bit of quirky funk to the space, which will not be outgrown in a couple of years.
