Design Inc co-founders Khushboo and Kunal Khandelwal had to design a home for a family of four. The homeowners are well-travelled, well-read and lovers of collectibles and all things vintage. The brief given was that the decor should tell stories, old and new, creating and evoking memories along the way. After numerous interactions and meetings with the client, they formed a genesis of the project and gave shape to their ideas.

Located in an old building in South Mumbai, this apartment faces a very busy road.
The designers affectionately named this home the Layered House, because the interiors exemplify both vintage and modern elements. The design also embraces an interweave of colours and materials, such as brown teakwood, red brick, golden brass, white metal and so on, across the house, which adds lots of character.
The original entry to the house was through a narrow corridor. The designers amped it up by creating a niche in the foyer to give the illusion of an entrance lobby.
“A large distressed-wood-framed mirror on a brick wall is flanked by an old brass artefact from the client’s personal collection. The glass and brass planter adds depth to the narrow entrance corridor,” says Kunal Khandelwal.

“The corridor leading off from the entrance is lined with heavily fluted teakwood panels that are juxtaposed with beige walls, a wooden floor, a coved ceiling, and doors with panels,” adds Kunal.

On the left side of the narrow passageway is the living room. The centrepiece of the living space is an original hide rug from the client’s personal collection, on which the coffee table is placed. The seating here comprises vintage leather Westminster sofas and scattered armchairs. Metal lamps, treasure chests filled with old ship parts and other collectibles add to the ambience.
Exposed brick walls bring a sense of depth to the space.

“Devoid of fabric curtains, the teakwood windows across the house feature louvred wooden blinds, adding to the textural quality and drama of the space,” says Khushboo Khandelwal. Recessed lights, combined with ambient lighting, softly illuminate the space and create an interplay of shadows on the brick walls.
The bar is inspired by the gentlemen’s cigar lounge of old and has a quirky vibe. Its aesthetics are similar to the living room, including heavily fluted teakwood panels and exposed brick walls. The quirky vintage wooden bar has an eye-catching melange of industrial elements: a collection of old worker’s tools. It is flanked by rustic leather-and-metal stools.

On the right side of the passageway is the dining room. The table has an interesting history and is customised from an old ship’s metal jack as a base. A wooden bench and chairs tie the eclectic-industrial ambience together.

“The master bedroom has a sense of vintage luxury, with dark blue walls and ceilings combined with distressed wood surfaces and brass detailing. The bed, headboard and vintage leather chairs are all sourced from Pottery Barn,” says Khushboo.

“The teakwood-finish metal windows here, have textured wooden louvre blinds like the rest of the space,” she adds.
The master bathroom has a luxurious spa feel. A large window lets in natural light, with a screen of dense green foliage for privacy. The rich brown tones of the marble reflect light to add glamour and offset the white sanitaryware.
“The daughter’s bedroom is designed to lend a cheerful and vibrant vibe. A large collage of colourful printed fabrics forms the headboard and the main design feature of the room. Jade walls are further accessorised by quirky, funky and colourful artefacts, including the daughter’s personal collection,” says Kunal.
The son is an ardent Harry Potter and Mattel toys fan and the theme of this room is inspired by them. The fluted deep-blue walls serve as the backdrop for this space.

The room is filled with collectibles, quotes on cushions, bobbleheads and figurines. There are also flea-market finds from Australia and a good collection of books.
Besides the master bathroom, there are two other bathrooms in the house.
