Hyderabad Houzz: This Grand Home Has an Eclectic Personality to Match
Light colours, earthy textures, Indian art, installations and lots of lounging areas highlight the design of this home by Sona Reddy Studio
The client wanted their two-level home’s design to represent modern India. For this task, they sought the help of Sona Reddy of Sona Reddy Studio, who not only helped create a comforting sanctuary but also used the home as a canvas to showcase local art.
The ground floor houses a formal living room, a pantry and a guest bedroom. On the first floor are two dining rooms (one formal, one casual) along with a kitchen, a semi-formal living room and the son’s bedroom. On the second floor is the master bedroom and the daughter’s bedroom.
The house opens into a large, spacious living room. The entrance has a wood-panelled double door, finished in a sage green with brass detailing. “The living room and the entire home show a harmonious integration of colours and choice of materials. All the installations have been created by local artisans,” Reddy says. This space is marked by a yellow kalai (a form of decorative work on stone) wall with marble bands. The floral relief-work on the wall is in concrete.
Sofas: Room Therapy, Pinakin, Philips Antiques, Sarita Handa

“On the other wall, an antique bench is placed on the brass-pipe-clad wall. This room ties together multiple materials, colours and elements: marble flooring, brass pipes, cane-finished doors, a large sculpted art piece and antique furniture,” says Reddy.

The white marble staircase with an artwork of little brass flowers leads to the upper levels that house the bedrooms and casual seating areas. “We created a large light slit [not photographed] for a mesmerising shadow and light effect,” Reddy says.

On the first floor, the dining room area has been divided into two sections. “This is the more formal dining space. The blue panelled wall is enhanced with a metal sculpture of a tree, made by a local artist,” Reddy says.
The lights above the table look like handcrafted origami pieces, specially sourced from Mooi, Flos.

The second, more informal eating space has an Ikat-panelled ceiling in reds, greens and maroons “in contrast to the wall panels, which have lighter patterns and shades,” says Reddy. The marble round table and the chairs offer a space for more intimate, casual meals.
The traditional Indian vibe of this room is further enhanced with the cow wall-decorations, artwork and also the tableware. Adding a modern flair to this space is the chandelier by Flos.

A partition in wood and fabric subtly divides the dining and TV areas. “On the right is an extension of this space – a blue kalai wall with lotuses carved in granite,” Reddy says.
Behind the TV room is the son’s bedroom. The space has been designed to encapsulate an warm, earthy vibe. The four-poster bed is enhanced with a blue quilted headboard against the grey cement-finish wall.
A small seating area with a bright orange sofa creates a striking contrast against the cement walls.
On the second floor is the daughter’s bedroom, which follows the warm rustic look of the son’s bedroom. “We made a customised wood-and-fabric bed, with an installation of ceramic butterflies on the wall. The wall has an Italian cement finish by Oikos,” says Reddy.

An informal lounge area on this floor is attached to a library, “which is a part of the corridor that leads to the master bedroom,” Reddy says. The bookshelves, interspersed with meshwork cabinets, along with the long grey sofa, make for an ideal spot to enjoy books or a nap.
In the master bedroom a large bed-head panel of Indian fabric has been placed against a hand-painted wall.
