See how designers optimise space and organise functions in open living rooms successfully
Open-plan living spaces can be tricky to execute in terms of efficient arrangement and mapping of furniture, function and focal points of the room. Segregating the seats around various activity areas, situating the storage units, dispensing sufficient circulation area, while establishing aesthetic, clutter-free views is crucial in designing an open living room. Looking for inspiration? Read on and let these 4 cleverly laid out open-plan living rooms fuel your design and decor ideas.
Two living areas, a formal and an informal one, are flanked by a long balcony along one side of the open-plan space. The two living spaces are situated close together to tailor a cosy and well-utilised zone, effectively separated yet visually and spatially connected.
In the other side of the space dining table stands in the centre and, near the wall, a bar with a swivelling counter. The ceiling design and lighting fixtures in white foster a sense of unity between the living and dining spaces.

Unified by concrete flooring, brick finishes and streamlined furniture, spaces catering to different functions seamlessly give way to each other. Arranging the living, dining and breakfast-bar furniture along a single line creates a linear easy-to-use layout.
The double-height ceiling not only adds to the volume of the open plan but visually demarcates the dining area as well.

The designers renovated the open-plan space in this home and created the lobby, living, bar and dining areas as bright, obstacle-free spaces. The long, linear alignment and layout constraints were cleverly mitigated by splitting levels, introducing partitions and putting up built-in fitments.

You can see the display unit in these pictures, at the far end of the room.
A few steps below the lobby are the bar and living space. The bar is given a visual uplift by setting it on a raised platform under a lighting fixture of pendant bulbs. The walls and the existing column guide the placement of multiple seating options around the living area.

Abutting the living space is the puja area with a surrounding water body and a double-height ceiling.
Opposite the living area is the staircase well and a sunken pebbled courtyard with bonus seating and indoor plantation. Beyond this is the dining and kitchen section, raised a few steps to virtually partition the areas without the need for walls.
While the play of light and floor levels breaks the monotony of the view frame, the black granite floor, wooden accents and touches of traditional decor bolster the coordinated and unified look of the sweeping space.
