@susanmpowell the hood is 6” wider than the range, which allows it to still capture the hot air as it rises and spreads out. The shelves themselves have another 3” of spacing away from the hood. An appropriate exhaust system like this, when used correctly, makes those lower shelves usable, unless a REALLY messy cook splatters food everywhere.
