Will this pergola post look wired or in the way?
I am planning my back yard deck with a free standing pergola. If I am placing the 12by10 pergola in the place shown below, will the post be really annoying when I step out of the sliding door or even look wired even from inside the room?
I am trying to keep the cost down, so a pre-made pergola kit might be a better choice for us. Any other ideas on where or what size of pergola best fit my space.
ps, I would like to grow some vining/creeping plants in the flower bed around the 2 sides of the pergola in the summer.

2 years agoOur layout is similar to yours. The pergola measures 8x12 and lies about 12 feet from the house but a 4’ egress deck reduces that distance. We have a French door leading outside which is not directly aligned like you plan. If possible it may make your pergola more inviting to have the post repositioned to not be directly in front of the door. You don’t mention your climate but in the Midwest we have rain and snow. Periodic maintenance is necessary so I would not wish vines growing on the pergola, thus we have gardens adjacent.Li Ge thanked fnmrobertsRelated Discussions

Comments (52)A houzz contributor, not too long ago, had made a wine rack out of 4'x4' wooden pallets, that are used in the US to move a load of goods with a fork-lift truck. Perhaps they have them in your country. He cut them in half so they were only two feet deep and stacked them up to high counter height. You could take the 4 items you had hung, and put them in a "shadow box", or individual deep frames to tie then together, to create I piece that looks more substantial on the wall, Then add a little ledge for photos, and you would even have room on the cabinet for the cool bottles that were on the floor, and that cool chest could definitely find a home as an end table, or entry table. Comments (53)I am so happy to see you here! I will have to go back and see if i can retrieve my posts... thought I would make them into a little book for my daughter, with photos. Quick run-down on the bathroom (not travels, no time) - The kitchen has a rather elegant sliding door with beveled glass panels. Painted white, since this was the original colour. GD's new bathroom has the doors I had picked earlier; i thought of polishing them but decided sprayed automobile paint (on a resin primer) would wear better. Especially since it is such a small bathroom, and she is so splashy. I have this finish in my kitchen and it has lasted 15 years now. A tad chipped here and there, but only needs a wipe down once a week. Same finish for the balcony doors, also split like the bathroom. We have a new wardrobe, a study table with built-in shelves, and a small chest of drawers for her odds and ends. I want to re-tile the tiny balcony, more as a little statement. Currently we are looking at Portuguese tiles, though I did think a mosaic with a funky cat might be nice. Let me see the costing. The room will be painted a neutral adobe, with bright white woodwork and an off-white ceiling. This means she can go wild with cushions and covers. Other changes in the flat; We have changed the glass in the master bedroom and living room from small cramped panes to a single pane for each section with a 1" bevel all round. Doubles the cost of the glass, but looks so elegant! The air-conditioning is being re-located. The compressors were all mounted in the bedroom and living room balconies, which looked terrible and meant the balconies (very narrow, only 30" deep) couldn't be used for anything. Not even plants. So they are being moved so that the compressors can be mounted at the rear of the building. two down, one to go. Now we can put in some nice plants, fishtail palms etc. The kitchen counter on one side came out intact and will be reused elsewhere. I am planning overhead storage, cupboards, and a draining cupboard for plates and glasses. Right now there is no dish washer, though a place is earmarked, but for now I will put in a cupboard with steel racks for cups, glasses and plates, all hidden behind pressed glass doors. This is all in the planning stage.... Pictures in a little while, they are mostly on my ipad and don't transfer well to the mac. They come without numbers... so I have to rename the or something. 2 years ago@li ge - thank you, it has been 25 years in the making. We began with dirt and a new build.
I designed and built the pergola. The size is to comply with a rediculous local building code which prohibits larger than 100 sq ft structures without a crawl space below. Everything is cedar. The rafters are nested egg crate style. Here are a few additional pictures should you wish to persue a custom build.
For several years there was lattice on top to increase shade until the trees matured.

The natural travel occurs towards and away from the door is definitely a problem.
Here is a photo of the back side of our house.
We live in Pennsylvania, where winters are long and cold. We like to enjoy some shade in the summer but I don't want to block too much precious warm sunshine into our house during the winter time. That is one reason I don't prefer an attached pergola right next to the windows and sliding doors. And in the meantime, our lot is not big enough and doesn't have the proper grade to build a large enough deck/patio to sit a pergola on it. I also got a few quotes for a custom made attached pergola, 10by16, as shown in the picture below, which is around 10,000, and that is beyond our budget.
I was thinking hard to come up with a better and still affordable solution. I found a pre-made pergola kit which is 16by12. The 16' span may help to move the post away from the pathway outof the sliding door.And then we can expand the deck (where the pergola sits) 4' further away from the house.

And the pergola kit we found is this one. They also have a more traditional style pergola which we like more, but seems to be out of stock.

Does this plan make more sense? And btw, anyone have experience with backyard discovery steel pergolas? The reviews on their website seems too good to be true.

2 years ago@Li Ge Thanks! These decking board are composite boards. They are from @TimberTech. On the first photo we used tigerwood, pecan and mocha which are all colors in their legacy collection. It definitely required some playing with to get it right. My favorite detail in that first link was bringing the boards on to the fierplace.
