Suggestions for family room fireplace.

hi,

I am looking fir suggestions on what to do on either side of my fireplace. All existing items will be removed.

floating shelves? low dresser w/art or mirtors above?

colors are neutral- grey, white, blues, natural

Start by making the fireplace and t v one design. Install, paneling over the mantel. This inspiration photo shows a molding at ceiling to anchor everything. Once that is in place, you are free to do whatever on either side of t v/fire place.

Because the fireplace is flat to the wall, recessed built-ins aren't possible.

You could buy shelving:

Hopefully, the above photo would work for the entire room.

Do you need extra seating? Because I could see a comfy arm chair to the left of the fireplace, with a reading lamp and small table -- it doubles for making the current seating into more of a conversational grouping. Then the otherside could be just about anything -- keep the plant and add fireplace tools or a sculpture; put in a low bookcase with art hung above; maybe a storage cabinet for games and other things... what do you need functionally?

I think they mean 5 rooms, not 5 bedrooms.....one master bedroom and 2 bedrooms for children with twin beds or bunk beds in each. I lived in a 1,300 sq ft house for 2 yrs with my husband and 2 sons. My suggestion would be to have an open floor plan for the kitchen, dining area and family room in one large room. Add a bar in the kitchen for casual dining. Be sure to include storage in family room for toys, games, etc. Add a built in desk in eiher the kitchen or family room areas . The master bedroom and bath should be large enough to accomodate a queen size bed and if possible a sitting area (maybe a bay window large enough for for a small loveseat or a couple of comfortable chairs). I would recommend a large walkin shower but no tub for the master bath. Instead have a nice size tub/ shower combo in the hall bath. Too make your house feel larger, use neutral camel, beige, gold or grey paint and carpet through out the kitchen, dining area, family, hallways and hallbath. If you want to add color, limit it to 3 bedrooms. Hanging all your window treatments at ceiling height will make your rooms feel larger and taller.

OK... but the wire wont be lower as it is fixed now. The wire in the pics below is the wall facing each other. They were leveled on equal height but the beam on one wall makes it seem a little above. But i think you guys are absolutely right that up and down lights wont look good there. I think you are right about down lights lessismoore. Would it look good if i go with two different lights on opposite walls??? it would look odd right.

I think your inclination toward rustic and distressed pieces is the right way to go. Consider a movable coffee table - I see 2 recliners that may necessitate some table shifting?- an area rug large enough to incorporate all the seating, rather than just a hearth rug, and enclosed storage for your electronics. If you can post shots of the room, other Houzers may have some more ideas.

Hi Ritul, There are many ways in which we can segregate the living room from the family section. However, a lot depends on how these places have been planned. Sometimes, constructing a wall may be a good solution to cut out air loses and sound. In other cases it might not be feasible. Here are some suggestions in case you want to avoid civil changes and still achieve the desired result. 1] Jali Partition/ Rafters These act as a permanent segregation but don't take away from the entire volume of the space. Its visually light but effective. 2] Furniture A bookshelf, a tv unit or a settee act as a visual barrier between two spaces as well as maintain the entire size of the room. 3] Portals and swing doors These are great as there is a visual obstruction to maintain privacy that act as an aesthetic element as well. 4] Sliding Partitions These work very well both ways - in case you want to segregate the space you can keep them closed or in case you want a large space to yourself to host a number of people you can open them to combine the two spaces. If budget allowed, I’d do a combination of low cabinets/shelving and move tv.

here are two photoshopped pics of your wall. you like either of these?

(you need a cool ceiling light/chandelier w/either of these)

you can find unfinished (or white) base cabinets to fit as builtins. use custom trim work to finish the surround/edges. top w/butcher block or pieces of wood fit together. use the same wood for your mangle surround (try a 2x6, 3x8 size) Get the same wood in planks to use for the floating shelves. shiplap on one, smooth paint on the other. wire the spots for sconces.

The white one is a skim coat plaster painted BM Vanilla Milkshake. the black one is a larger format black tiles (try a porcelain, black slate or a basalt) all the way to the ceiling. the wood beam should go all the way across. you could keep your hearth.

Want more ideas? i have many!

These people redid theirs w/ikea billy bookcase hack. really amps up that wall. the link to their site is TheDIYplaybook" if you want to see their tutorial. they show exactly how they did it.

more traditional look w/all the millwork. built in cabient w/wood top, wood mantle, white shelving. there's more millwork above the fireplace as well, and sconces.

Or, you could do a shiplap on that entire wall, retile the fireplace surround,

and on the sides, bring in a wood console, decor items,

or, do a board/batten on that wall, fireplace surround like shown, white oak wood mantle, and on othe sides, do a little built in w/floating wood shelves.

how about these types of built ins? get a pre-made base cabinet, paint it, add hardware, and do a vertical shiplap w/floating shelves. (ignore this brick, c next photo, or do what is pictured above)

Retile your fireplace w/a zellige tile, and get a white oak beam for your mantle. hang art or tv above if you like

more modern? skim coat the entire fireplace like this, do some floating benches, shiplap, sconces.

or, get a remnant piece of quartz or marble, do a larger box surround like this one, wood beam mantle, thinner builtin on the side. (ikea)

do a horizontal wood plank all around the fireplace. this black surround is flamed basalt tile. for the sides, they did floating shelves/sconce and a built in bench w/cusions

diff ways on doing that too. I like this little bench area. this fireplace has been plastered and a smooth wall above it.

do a built in on the other side.
