There are many ways in which we can segregate the living room from the family section. However, a lot depends on how these places have been planned. Sometimes, constructing a wall may be a good solution to cut out air loses and sound. In other cases it might not be feasible. Here are some suggestions in case you want to avoid civil changes and still achieve the desired result.
1] Jali Partition/ Rafters
These act as a permanent segregation but don't take away from the entire volume of the space. Its visually light but effective.
2] Furniture
A bookshelf, a tv unit or a settee act as a visual barrier between two spaces as well as maintain the entire size of the room.
3] Portals and swing doors
These are great as there is a visual obstruction to maintain privacy that act as an aesthetic element as well.
4] Sliding Partitions
These work very well both ways - in case you want to segregate the space you can keep them closed or in case you want a large space to yourself to host a number of people you can open them to combine the two spaces.
Hope this helps. Do let us know how you did it. All the best!
