Hi, I can see what you mean & why you think it’s the wall and having puzzled over it for a few moments, I think it’s the seating area that makes the wall seem so harsh. The sofa / tv area is very low & box -shaped. There’s nothing in that area that has height, curves or ‘softness’ / texture. My first thought was curtains but it looks like they might be difficult to fit. A tall lamp or tall floor-standing lamp might help. Maybe a console behind the sofa. I’m sure other people will have more ideas but I think adding some differences in height of objects will help.

I actually think the TV wall is the most successful part of the room, the colour looks perfect next to the outside brick wall and the long low unit works well. I wonder if it's an issue with lack of contrasts, If you imagine a white oval dining table with coloured chairs, that whole area as you walk in would come to life. The biggest pale rug you can find under the sofas would also help. I would consider adding another colour in the form of dining chairs, possibly new sofas if you are changing them, olive green would be good and work with the grey and the floor. A large plant in a pot outside next to eh window would also provide interest and bring in some hight.

Have you thought about having some sort of wall unit made which hides the TV?

We had the dilemma of not wanting that big black rectangle on display when it was not in use and we solved it by having it concealed - see photos. Something more elaborate on your big wall might work well and give display areas and book shelves which could look nice. The fact that the TV rises and lowers (like the ones you can get for the end of beds) is a fun touch too!

We only use the sofa with its back to the TV when we have visitors and so are not watching the TV!

Hi, personally I would reposition the dining table in front of the windows, loose the wing chairs, pouffe and coffee table. Use the footstool/ ottoman as a coffee table instead and rearrange the lounge furniture moving the tv to either the middle or the other end of the unit depending on your furniture configuration. A large piece of artwork on the wall where the TV currently stands or 2 pieces if the TV is centralised. A floor standing arc light at one end of the sofa and some tall plants well positioned would help too finish off with a very large area rug, picking out colours from the new artwork. Beautiful room with huge potential, I hope you find a scheme that works for you.

I agree with colourhappy in that I think the TV wall works - the position and height of the unit and Tv, as well as the wall colour. For me the rest of the room is all the same shade of brown. I do like the table, but perhaps a rug under it will give it some definition from the flooring. If you’re changing the sofa I would go for one with a blue grey tone to compliment the wall. I’d also simplify the tv area with less furniture, like a large corner sofa with a pouffe doubling as a coffee table

something like this would hide the tv and give you a new focal point with an electric or gas fire. The room layout is not cohesive; a large tv area, a separate sitting area, and a large dining area all separate with no connection. Maybe the tv area could be more to the rear of the grey wall, away from the windows, then a seating area focused to the garden and the dining table rotated and put at the other side of the room from the tv. The contrast of the grey wall and white wall is a bit too stark. If it were me I would paint both walls grey (but I like dark) or find a feature wallpaper/mural. Moving the tv along and painting the other wall would create a nice cocooning effect for a tv area and if you change the sofa colour to something brighter it would really pop against the grey. Find something to connect all 3 areas - a colour, fabric, cushion.

What a great room ? :)

At the moment you have a calming space very colour complimenting each other. It looks like there is a reading area too where the two chairs are behind the large sofa. Are there shelves on that wall ?

Looks like it needs zoning and blending in. I would say sometimes it is trial and era and what works for a family. But if you do not like it switch it around.

The key question is what do you want this room to do ?

A few questions?

1. Could you post another picture of the wall space where you are taking the picture? So that we see more of the space.

2 Do you have kids ? (what sort of age?)

3.Did you shop around for the woodburner ? £15K sounds a lot. It will not dominate unless you want it to be the focal point.

4. A wall cabinet does not need to take over a wall if it blends in, did you investigate this already were there any you liked at all ? It could be just floating shelves.

5. Do you need storage in this room ?

6. Colours, what colours are already in the room and what colours do you like ? Would you min pops of colour... on the wall are some images with a pop of blue possibly aqua ?

Some thoughts :

1.You could hang sheer curtains to soften. There are ceiling rods or wires for this.

2. Move the dining table to behind the Large sofa is. So the front is the living TV area. Therefore more natural light when eating. (this assuming there is not a door there.)

3. Place the two winged chairs where the blue footstool is. Or the blue armchair and footstool together. There or on the opposite side.

4. Move the TV so that it is central. On the wall too. That would balance the room more. You could frame it so it looks like a picture.

5. Add more pictures, photo's to the wall. There are some amazing offers at the moment with only postage paid to get photos on canvas or a print in a frame. Add personal items too. grouped together on a shelf or on the TV cabinet.

6. With big windows / doors, utilize the view and natural light. If you get another sofa put it next to the long one facing in to the room by the windows /door. Behind that put your two winged chairs facing out wit ha poof or a coffee table and that could be your "reading" area.

7. Group the plants together nearer the light or at the corner. So that it feels like you are bringing the garden in. Or next to the Sofa. Hang plants from the ceiling or on the wall.

8. A signature light or group of lights over will lift and an interest to the ceiling. And zone off the area. Adding a rug underneath with give do that too.

A great space! I specialise in large paintings so I may be biased :) but I feel a large painting to the right of TV would be great - perhaps picking up the colour of the brickwork of the garden in the wall, I think the room need a bit more vibrant colour overall, even if just scatter cushions perhaps some taller palm plants to vary height. I feel the colour of your table is fighting the colour of the wall and floor slightly - perhaps consider painting it white?

Wow it is a beautiful room! And because it is so large it‘s a challenge to find the right layout. Lots of good suggestions here so won’t repeat what many have already said. I would, however, flip over the dining and sitting area so the dining is close to the garden and below the roof lights (always nice to have the light above your dining) and the sitting/tv area where it’s darker and cooler to lounge.

I think your reading area in that corner looks really good and i Wouldn’t change that! My last comment is about the room orientation and the light. Is it a north facing room perhaps? If it is, personally I would not use such a dark and cool grey on that wall but instead a warmer colour that lifts the darkness. I am sure that the room will be soon a success!

Since you don't want too much clutter, try adding some floating shelves or a simple media unit so it doesn't take over the room.

You can create panelling on the tv wall, something minimal no fuss, and the TV to be mounted. Also, use a much softer feature wall colour that compliments the rest of the room, I would also consider adding a pendant light above the dining table.

Agree with renniejb, We also use our Mom's chair with its back to the TV when we have visitors and so are not watching the TV! There are a lot of options to choose as wall units
