Effectiveness is influenced by capacity of unit. If you are trying to mount a 270 cfm fan more than 30" above cooktop, then it may make noise but will do little to clear the air. If it is 1000 cfm, then it can be higher than 30". So the answer is "it depends". Most people don't mount them more than 36" above the cooktop unless it is a really high powered unit.

Hello Pete, It is indeed tricky to select the laminate from small sample patches. We feel it is often misleading as the small section is just a 2 inch piece cut out from a 8ft x 4ft sheet. Depending on your location you can do either. Check on Merino website .They would show images of the full sheet and if you are lucky even real life application of the same. A McSo. Couldn't the base of 15cm overhang be supported end to end with steel. As a single steel structure mounted on the larger cabinet area visible here. It should be sufficient for supporting the extension. Corbels will provide additional support but IMHO may not be required.
