Actually the problem of tracking stones into the house is not as bad as you imagine. That's because the gravel is laid into a retaining system such as COREPath, which means very few of the stones move around and it provides a firm surface to walk on.
As for weeds:... they can take root in any ground including the gaps between paving, so no garden is maintenance free. Generally weeds will root loosely in gravel and so providing you don't leave them to become established, they are easily removed.
Finally there are also benefits of gravel paths. For one thing, they are often cheaper to install than other forms of hard landscaping and they are also SUDS compliant.
