The room looks dark since there is no window nearby. You can consider 2 Contemporary Pendant light on either sides of the sofa such that it falls low and avoid older fixtures. Painting the wall to a brighter color, changing the upholstery to match that and using laminate wood flooring, would also help.

Since there is already some effort in making this space, try adding minimal additions to this space. The wall behind the painting can have a wallpaper with traditional pattern or motifs. It could be very lovely. Adding a large plant at the corner with a ceramic planter. Try full height curtains to cover up the wall surface and make the window look larger. Hope it helps!
