Lighting a kitchen with a sloping ceiling

We are building a new house with a large open plan kitchen/dining/living area, and a sloping ceiling - 5m down to 2.4m. We are debating how to light the kitchen area. Would recessed adjustable ceiling spotlights be too far from the units/floor to provide adequate light? I feel tracked lights would spoil the space. We don't have any wall units to put in under unit lighting.

So, took some pics with iPhone and it's difficult to get right how it looks with the lights on. But here we go, just to show how the different lights work....

I'm no help but have the same dilemma so will watch your post with interest.
From looking at vaulted kitchen ceilings on Houzz it seems to be a mixture of in ceiling lights plus drop pendants in specific areas. I'm looking at some wall lights over the work surface, Made.com and cox & cox have a good selection.

Thanks - we were thinking pendant(s) over the central island, and over the dining table and a big one over the living area to define the spaces. Good luck with your project.

Hi, Our new home is nearing completion. We are looking for suggestions and ideas in decorating our living room and kitchen based on the plan attached. All walls in living room are double ceiling. 1) We plan to put our TV on wall B. Nadia, You need to provide some more snaps showing the entire room, including the location of the beam, its height & clear height of the slab etc. One idea could be to extend the width of the beam by just about 25 mm with gypsum board on either sides, at the bottom level, with a right angular vertical of 25 mm as well & provide LED lighting strip for indirect lighting...

Hello Sheila,

It's probably a good idea to speak to a lighting company and get them to do you a lighting design so you have assurance that you're getting the correct amount of light in each area. They have tools that will calculate the lux levels and loads of technical things!

Hi, I have a kitchen with sloping ceiling and no upper cabinets. We have recessed adjustable spotlights in the ceiling (on a dimmer). Also have wall lights around the perimeter and a long wall light above the peninsula (also on a dimmer). Thank you - what a nice kitchen. We don't have windows in the roof, but lots of glass in the walls. I had wondered too about some wall spotlights to augment the light to the worktops.

Recessed adjustable spotlights will work well. Think about some wall lights too.

We seldom use the ceiling spotlights, but I'm happy that we have them in case we do need more light. We do always use the wall lights though. They used to give enough light when we still had the kitchen all around the walls. With the peninsula though, I think I'll really need the light that's suspended over that now the shorter, darker days are coming.

We've put in the Velux windows about 5 years ago. They've added an unbelievable amount of light! If at all possible, do consider having roof windows. Ours are remote controlled and on a rain sensor. We also have lights in them.

I'll take some pics tonight to show you the effect in the evening.
