What do you call this on the kitchen counter

I saw a picture of this in a magazine and I'm kicking myself for not taking a picture of it and now I can't find an example of it ANYWHERE! All it was was a piece of wood, kinda like a corbel, that marked the end of a kitchen counter that went from the upper cabinet down to about halfway down the counter depth. It wasn't very wide, just something to make a visual stop and to keep things from just dropping off. All I'm finding is counter "edge" in my searches. Kitchen counter hutch leg?? This is driving me crazy not a single image of it seems to exist anywhere but in the magazine I saw in passing.

The bottom picture is very much the same idea except that it didn't reach all the way across the bottom of the cabinet, it started about halfway, but yes! that's the idea. How can I find more pictures of this to get different designs? Does this feature have a name?

Hello Abinash, Correct me if I am wrong in my guess that you liked the basin so much that this entire unit was build around it :) that too in the centre of the room. Jokes apart, the base cabinet doesn't provide a few inches gaps to the user for keeping the foot comfortably while using a hand wash. Have you considered the water proofing and maintenance of this unit as what it appears it is wood with laminated top as of now. I have used both with good results. The main difference between Quartz and Granite are 1) price, 2) colour range. Granite generally works out cheaper, because you can buy the exact quantity you require. Quartz comes in large slabs of specific sizes- standard size being roughly 10'-0" x 4'6", so there tends to be more wastage if you don't plan the cutting well. But Quartz is pretty and comes in a wide range of colours and can be re-buffed at a later date. Quartz also comes in various thicknesses- the most commonly used being .75" to about 1.25". And especially when you use dark wood cabinets in a kitchen or bathroom, beige and white counter tops work very well. Some people go even with coloured counter tops like blue, orange, yellow. Natural stone in light colours tend to be porous and stain easily, so I prefer to go with pure black which is safe.

Do you mean bracket? The piece under the cabinet? That's a bracket. Can be made or purchased.

I did google cabinet corbel, but as it is in this photo, 99.99% of them are just little pieces of wood that are attached to the bottom of the cabinets. There are very few photos of any that go from the cabinet to the counter. I guess the picture I saw in the magazine was custom, but I'm astounded at how few pictures of this I am able to find so that I can show my cabinet maker how I want it to look.

it seems the idea is to mimic the look of a separate hutch top and sideboard. i think you should have a discussion with your cabinet company about what they can do for you, custom. i was able to have furniture arched bases made in house for my cabinets that they didnt have available 'off the rack'; they made them, did the factory quality spray paint of them to match the cabinets.

i'd take inspiration from photos of hutches and have a consultation with your cabinet company.

if you google 'painted hutch' you might see an exact profile that appeals to you.

It's not like any of those pictures. It actually creates a barrier so that items don't roll off the counter, so it eliminates that abrupt end of a counter. If only I had taken a picture because now I'm doubting myself but it looked soooo pretty. I guess I'll take a chance and have my cabinet guy make it from my description and hope it's not odd.

Well I'm no artist and I don't really remember the exact details but I'm going by the feels here. Can you see the drawing? It looks a lot like that second picture that was posted. Very unassuming.

I get a bunch of free magazines for some reason. It's annoying but since we started the renovation it's been nice to have. I don't remember if it's better home and gardens or good housekeeping or something else for that matter. It had an article about a family who moved to Park City and designs their "destination home". Another article that had this kitchen feature was a kitchen where they moved a door and it made the kitchen more funcional. I really feel dumb for not at least snapping a pic but I get sooo much mail I just wanted to clear it out.

Roxy your pic is fine and I think if your show that to your cabinet guy he can manage. Here are a few more pics - not quite exact but perhaps they will help your cabinet guy and you come up with a design. Most of these kitchens were described as "Victorian style". I think I would just call them brackets - just designed in a specific way.

Funny. I can't remember the last time something rolled off my counters. I wouldn't want to have to clean around that thing.

Yeah, Roxy, that' a bracket. Just work with an architect/designer to come up with something you liked . The ideas presented here should give you some thoughts? Do they help?

Yes, thanks! It's not so much for things not to roll off but to demarcate the end there. The end of the counter will align with a door to another room and it seemed nice to have that barrier there.

Often times it is called an extended side when working with a cabinet maker. It is when the side of the cabinet extends down to the counter with or without a profile. This is a nice look with a framed cabinet since the 1" - 1 1/2" frame width runs down to the counter giving it a substantial thickness. There is no interruption as there would be when a bracket is inserted under a cabinet.
