Don't do it! It's too cute as it is! I would change your front door and update the columns to something more solid and square to match the casings around the windows. And then I would stop.

Thanks for your thoughts!! The main thing I wasn't liking is the red brick and black shutters together. I also think the white looks so stark because of the dark shutters. It's tricky to know what to do there!

Black is classic with brick, and you could alway use a softer white. Very nice house!

I thought so as well. Do you just mean the color of the roof? We are planning to replace the roof very soon as well so the color can be updated.

If the roof can change you open up many possibilities. If you want a substantial makeover- gray/black roof, lime washed brick, toned-down white (taupey/gray undertone), dark gray shutters and a color pop door. I would get a color consultant or designer on this- so worth every cent!

It is sweet just as it is! I would probably put a black metal roof on it...

You have a southern living sort of brick house . .not a plain ranch house at all. Darling windows and casings and paneled trim . . the narrow shutters are the proper scale for this house. I would wash this brick but not with white . .. a warm soft green gray works with this roof . .. or if the roof changes, a taupe gray as Color Zen describes would be nice .. let me see what kind of photos to show the color mix. . I think the roof will look better when the house isn't darker than it . . though I agree that the black shutters suggest a black metal roof would be wonderful. They are awful if you live where it hails . . . back with color ideas . .

We too just updated our late 60's red brick home with columns and stark white. Still working on adding shutters, house numbers, and window boxes.

Great looking place,. Creamy white for what's white & leave everything else alone . I would re-landscape if it were mine though.

I would change the roof to black, paint the brick a soft or medium gray..change the railing to rod iron black, and paint the front door red. Then update the landscaping and change the fence....in other words...change it all.....lol

in the process of frt remodel also and considered shutters so did the research. I will tell you the shutters are not to scale. Shutters (technically, when closed) should equal the width of the windows. That was their org'l purpose. But...if you did decide to keep them they def are too dark against the red brick (but wld look beautiful against the khaki brick shown above!) If your storm door has black trim than your front door should be black as well (with a nice big door knocker on it-theyre cheap online). I'd love to see a couple dormer windows above (faux or real), paint your railings black, a new light fixture above the front door, maybe a nice house number plaque or a nice round louvered gable vent on the peaked trim above the porch, and a little tweaking of the landscaping would go a long way. You need some height in the areas between the windows...maybe arborvitaes or another thin upright, and the area front & below the railing is crying for some plantings! Love what kellykins did w/ her trim and so similar to yours! We took our ugly dated beige brick colonial to an old world French stone manor home w/ very French architectural details. Designed myself and just pored thru 100s of online pix for inspiration. Good luck!

Yes I would Soften the white with a grayer tone, Other than that I would do more to the landscaping than anything The house is fine the way it is. Another option would be to add a room to the left and widen the porch if you are a porch person ( I love'em ).

You have a beautiful home! Do not change the brick. Begin by removing all of the foundation plantings.....and do not " shape" any new ones. You might want to get a professional plan. New landscaping will be a huge plus!

Paint all of the white a khaki color. Remove the shutters. Paint the front door and storm door trim a nice contrasting color....maybe dark red ( maroon), or olive green.

I like the brick and hope you don't have to paint it.

Shrubs should not be shaped into squares and triangles.

Storm door and inner door should be painted the same color.

Though I agree about the shutters not being "to scale," they are the perfect scale for this house . . ergo my southern living house comment . . if you widen the shutters to proper width, they run off the corner of the house too close to the entry . . they are just right for the scale of the house as is.
