Putting drapes up at the windows will make your room go from blah to beautiful! It looks like you have some blue accessories and I would go with blue drapes to give the room some color.

I really hate window treatments. I live on a 5 acre wooded lot and love to see outside and we paid a lot of money for that trim and don't want to hide it. :(

You could paint the back of your display cabinet and the small wall with the framed tree print. You could also paint the door and side-lite's. Depending on color choice you could go a shade or two darker. Paint one or the door and side-lite's and see if you like it. I don't know if I'd paint all three of them. I just wouldn't paint all three exactly the same.

If you don't want to paint you could put together a grouping of prints or objects and hang on the small wall. Use a single color, to bring the pieces together. Because its a small area you could go with a bold color. Maybe peacock? Mix in things that aren't necessarily pictures. You could frame anything from a colorful greeting card to a feather. Many will tell you that valances are outdated, (and usually me) but they can be very up-to-date and be just the added color/pattern the space needs.

Should I do valances on my picture window and my patio door?

I would do both. They are in the same space.

What color should I go with?

Use your accent color you have in the space..Blue? I believe that is the accent color in living area also. Since the rooms are open to each other good idea to continue that color.

I think your initial statement about not blocking the windows is valid. I think the reason you think your space is "blah" is the colors are muted and nothing stands out. Think about painting some of the walls a striking color. Can't tell what your color choice is though you do have some turquoise accents, so maybe a deep blue? You can updo the table cloth as well. That's making it more "blah" I think.

I'd also consider redoing the ceiling light fixtures. They're kind of OK but don't add design interest.

What color would you suggest for hutch? Do you think I should do my whole open concept in grass cloth or just the one wall where cabinets are?

Sorry for the late answer but I'm relativity new to the site and haven't yet mastered how to follow threads.

A big factor in choosing a paint color for the back of your corner unit is the wall color and the color of your display pieces. Light or white display/decor pieces look best against a dark background.

If the current pieces or color (blue?) stay the same you could go with a number of colors. A sophisticated color option would be a gray green. Since it's such a small area you could go with a bold orange or yellow or even a vivid green. It sounds like a lot of color but with display/decor pieces in front of it, would give it personalty.

If you're going with grass cloth a soft muted yellow or the gray green would look good. Charcoal or black would look good too.

I took the liberty of looking at your ideabooks and it does appear you are partial to blues so I would keep that going and amp it up a bit. I have attached several palettes that may give you a start. For others or if you just want to explore colors, go to the design seeds website. They have some wonderful inspirational pictures that could lead you a completely different direction. Also, since you don't want to use drapes, (and I don't blame you), be sure to consider the colors in the changing landscape as you chose your colors for the room. Those window are like wonderful, ever-changing pieces of art that should not be ignored. :D
