We have a large 2 story stone fireplace, raised hearth, 4 foot opening for fire and 8 foot in overall length. We would like to add a mantle and are struggling with the right design for the uneven stone face.
You can drill steel pins into the stone face and add a floating 3 inch thick piece of reclaimed lumber. If the face is uneven you can scribe the the lumber for a tighter fit.
I agree with the previous comment. Large piece of reclaimed lumber (rusticity level dependent on your style). You can either float the mantle, as mentioned, or use brackets from the same wood.
