Stairs in two storey foyer

This is the view from the front door for the stairs we have running to the second floor. This is a two storey foyer. I asked the builder about the wall on the side of the foyer (right hand side in the pic) and he indicated it is a weight bearing wall and cannot be removed. I had envisioned the stairs to be open with railings on the right side of the stairs when walking up (the left side is the living room wall).
I am concerned the wall running up to 9' height in a two storey foyer will look odd. Interested in your thoughts and views. Any way around having this wall?

Comments (52)A houzz contributor, not too long ago, had made a wine rack out of 4'x4' wooden pallets, that are used in the US to move a load of goods with a fork-lift truck. Perhaps they have them in your country. He cut them in half so they were only two feet deep and stacked them up to high counter height. We started constructing with the foundation and then after foundation the real problem came into picture. Now i'm worried about the front elevation only. We have already decided to make the kitchen open n combine it with dining hall. As per your suggestions we can combine the stair hall which is in our hands. Let me tell you the most important thing, we are constructing each and every room according to "Vastu Shastra". So we are forced to place rooms according to that. Comments (1)There are discrepancies between the two plans you have provided, so it is difficult to understand what has been built and what is proposed. That being said, the powder room will have more of an impact on the garage space than you are indicating, and think that will have negative impacts on the garage which you will want to avoid. The location by the dining room and stairs will also require significant changes to the plan in that area (powder room is still represented too small). The powder room adjacent to the pantry seems like a great place to put it, or in the ancillary seating space to the right of the main living seating. That seating area does not seem to have a great functional importance except to have the dining/living/side living space extend across the whole house, unless there is something happening that isn't apparent from the plan view alone....See MoreNeed help to place the stair case effectively.

9 years agoJust wanted to jump in here because I'm finishing up my new very similar stairs. On our case the wall next to the stairs was indeed load bearing for the floor above. Picture shows the wall removed and replaced with steel beam and posts. Yes, there will be a handrail to prevent falling down the stairs to the basement!

It does seem a bit odd to have a wall there. Perhaps it could be taken back to the corner of the overlooking second floor and just leave a post in place to support the corner of the floor above.
You could then put in a glass railing system like the below.

9 years agoBTW, the steel beam and posts will be painted black to match the steel stringers. Next picture is in the basement, where we had the same type of wall, but down there we used a laminated wood beam and wood posts (all covered in drywall).
