I think it's lovely. Too bad you can't see a bit more of the headboard but things were scaled differently back then. Might you remove it and hang it on the wall so it sits higher? Not a criticism - just a thought. It's too pretty to hide behind pillows. And the quilt is amazing! Lots of opinions out there about wood and antiques. I believe I'm in the middle . We have a few antique malls in my area. Nothing ever seems to sell which may be because of the high price - they are more museums than stores. A thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It's nice to see an old piece of furniture put to good use - no trees were harmed for the sake of your guest room and no third world laborers were abused in your beds production.

have truly saved and transformed that bed into a worthy showcase for that
exquisite heirloom quilt. The carved appliqués are in excellent taste too – a fine
touch. This is true recycling at its best and very inspiring. Congrats on a job
well done!

Initially, looking at the style of the bed, I am torn, If you have the means to decorate the room around the bed, keep it in its natural wood. The Laura Ashley look comes to mind. Chinz fabrics, a lively wall color. Maybe you could find a bureau or chest in a period design to set off the bed. On the other hand, I would not be opposed to painting it. It has had its time being what it is. If it does not fit your style or visions now, in 2015, think about painting it and move on to what you think you will like best. And the style that fits you now. To me, a great decorating opportunity. Keep us posted.

Glad you painted. The original wood is valuable only if it suits what you vision, now. Ditto, the quilt is timelesss. A lovely look for the style of the bed. I too, would remove the throw pillows, use smaller bolster style pillows or small squares or round pillows in one of the colors from your quilt to brighten up the white at the top. You should be proud of your project.

To paint or not to paint. Hmmm... I love beautiful wood, antiques in particular. That said, just because a piece is old/antique or wood does mean it is beautiful. Sometimes a piece is just worn and tired. Painting furniture that has seen better days can be a fun and rewarding process. I am looking around my own house right now and I see hardwood floors, wood antique furniture, wood cabinets, etc. A piece of beautifully painted furniture would compliment -- not distract from -- this lovely living room. I am so happy to see what you have done with the bed frame. It looks gorgeous! Huge Annie Sloan fan over here!

Please don´t. It looks fantastic in it´s natural color. Much contrast and much chic. There is nothing more refreshing than wood being wood. It is my opinion. Good luck!

It's hard to read through a long string but I'm glad I picked up that you had already painted the bed before I added my comments and suggestions. You mentioned that the wood was badly nicked and looking at the new pics I must say that you have done a great job on the bed and with the bedding and decor. It looks very pretty indeed.

If it is real wood, don't paint it. If wood furniture is an antique, you can substantially decrease the value by refinishing it.

If the finish is scratched and needs work, consider cleaning it with a product intended for that purpose such as lemon oil soap and/or a fine steel wool and than add some Old English scratch cover or similar product. Any such product you put on the bed, be sure to put on every inch of it because each application will slightly alter the finish and you want the finish to "age" the same overall.
