Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars2 March 2014
“We have used Sneed's Landscape design and implementation services for several paving projects and for a majoy redesign of our driveway and street entrance to the driveway. Tim Krueger's designs were extremely good for our applications and the actual installations went very well and timely. His work crews were very good, professional, and very easy to communicate with. Tim was very thorough monitoring the projects to make certain everything was going per plan as well making any small adjustments as necessary to follow the shape of the land and visual effects. Tim and his crews always listened to our questions and provided good responses to them and any of our concerns and needs. We have had such good success with Tim and the Sneed's team that we will use them for any future projects that we may want to accomplish.”

“Russell provided the renderings for our driveway layout. Although we haven't completed our driveway project yet, I refer to the site plan on a regular basis. She researched the proper slope, drop, utilized the survey and drew the plans exactly to scale, incorporating topography and created a landscape reference table that included our entire yard. I look forward to hiring Russell again to completely revamp our entire property. She's talented, patient, gentle, has impeccable taste and excellent connections. Working with Russell is a win-win!”

“I had Oates Landscape Architecture upgrade and redesign my yard recently. Tony Oates planned, hired the contractor, and supervised the work. Tony even did some of the trimming himself. I was completely pleased with the results, and I would highly recommend OLA to do anyone's yard.”

“A city utility project destroyed a large portion of our existing landscaping; located on a very steep slope along our entire eastern property line. We faced a massive landscaping project which needed to address not only asthetics, but also creative design to limit erosion. Fortunately, Oak Valley had been recommended by friends, and we called Bruce. Our expectations were high, but Oak Valley exceeded them in every respect. Bruce not only drafted a thoughtful and detailed plan, he really listened to us - the design and hardscape/plants we preferred, our ability (limited) as gardeners to care for the project over time, and how we use the space. He also took the time to look at our neighbors' landscaping to be sure ours would fit in - and both neighbors and strangers stop by to say how beautiful it looks. His team was amazing; they were efficient, skilled, very pleasant to work with - and left the site as clean and organized as possible at the end of every day. We had to start the project in the spring on an emergency basis; we couldn't wait for fall planting. There have been torrential downpours and a scorching summer since completion, but the slope holds firm and the landscaping is beautiful. There have been a few plant casualties, but Bruce advised at the outset that we would do a checkup in the fall to update as needed. In the interim, he has patiently and promptly answered every "How do we take care of....?" question, and has stopped by several times to check on the project. Oak Valley turned a mud pit into a unique and beautiful garden, and sudden stress into a very enjoyable experience. Like our friends, we recommend Oak Valley highly.”

“They did a fantastic job! I highly recommend them. I have a house on the James with a fantastic view I did not want obstructed. I also wanted a great patio, elevated to maximize the view. The old patio needed to be demolished. But because of poor rear access it needed to be carried by wheelbarrow to the front. The new pavers and fill also had to be hand wheeled back to the rear, about 20 pallets of heavy material. In addition to the patio I needed my front walk replaced. I am a VERY detailed person with and engineering background. Josh spent tons of time over a 6 months to help me design the patio to meet my needs. I also contacted 5 other companies that claimed design and build services. None of them took the time to design the patio and listen to my needs. On two occasions Josh drove me out to show me other projects he did and how they addressed problems like mine. It was interesting that the other home owners were so friendly and eager to show me Josh's work. I went with Commonwealth because of all the effort to address all my concerns before starting. During the work I had some changes. A added a gas line conduit for a fire-pit and grill and electrical wiring at no charge even though it was not in the plans. I think other companies make their money on these change orders. Commonwealth was not the highest quote, one was double Commonwealth. But among the final 4 contenders they were the highest. But for the amount and quality of work they did I got a real bargain. During construction they paid careful attention to drainage and wall strength. They were careful to install geo-fabric and tamp each layer of fill in. (there is a youtube time lapse video I posted that's amazing. There has been no structural movement after 7 months including many freeze cycles. . And for the front walk Serg (their foreman) discovered my existing walk was off center by 8 inches over a 50 foot run. Not much, but it is this attention to detail. All of their works were very courteous and they cleaned up great. (The before photo shows a PVC frame to help me visualize the site lines from my kitchen window.)”

“Fern Hill Landscaping has been wonderful to work with! My husband and I are not much for gardening, but have about an acre of beautifully wooded land on a corner lot in a neighborhood near the James River. We needed something eye-catching yet low maintenance for our front yard, a design that would do well in shade and fit well in the neighborhood. The owner of Fern Hill took all of our concerns into consideration, guided us well in selecting plants, stones and pavers, and educated us on maintenance. We are now in phase 2 of the project, building on what the company completed last year, and will continue to work with them for the remainder of our landscaping projects! I highly recommend this company.”

“Megan and Brian created a sustainable landscape for our front yard that is absolutely gorgeous. What we really appreciated is that they included plants that gave our front yard winter interest and color as well! Their design included a rock garden feature, native plants, utilized some of our existing plants by relocating them to a better location, and they did the work themselves. They know how to plant plants PROPERLY! A year later we had them come back and mulch our front yard and design another stone area in our back yard. I would highly recommend them.”
