The mixture of grey green cabinets with the distressed wood floors and ceilings, gives this farmhouse kitchen a feeling of warmth. Cabinets: Brookhaven and the color is Green Stone Benjamin Moore paint color: There's not an exact match for Green Stone, but Gettysburg Grey, HC 107 is close. My client is brilliant , so he did some googling (is that a word?) and came across several sites that had a recipe to do just that. He put a steel wool pad into a jar of vinegar and let it sit for a bit. In another jar, he mixed black tea with water. Brush the tea on first and let it dry. Since it's more casual and informal than a traditional living room, it tends to see lots of use from every member of the family — TV, video games, homework, reading and game night are all acceptable here. Since they are the go-to spot for so many activities, family rooms need to include plenty of storage, ample seating and potentially a workspace. Because of this, planning and organizing your family room design prior to jumping into decorating mode is key. Read on for tips on how to layout and design your ideal space.

What kind of storage should I add to my family room?

Before you start your remodel, consider your overall storage needs. Think about what kinds of things you usually keep in your space, and choose family room furniture or built-ins that specifically accommodate those items. If you have young kids, toys might be an issue, so built-in cabinets or toy boxes and chests would be worthwhile investments. For high-tech families, add shelves for movies and video games and cabinets to hide small electronics like video game consoles and DVD players. Better yet, invest in a large entertainment center or media console for a cohesive look. To encourage good work habits pieces such as a bookshelf, desk, work table or built-in counter for homework and document organization can be a lifesaver. Once you've planned out your storage needs, it's time to start thinking about the fun stuff: decorating.

How do I decorate my family room?

Since this space generally has an informal feel, it lends itself well to a casual but fun decor style. Don't be afraid of a bright color scheme, but be careful of going overboard. You can either stick with neutral furniture and bright accents, or highlight the furniture and scale back the accessories. Regardless, your family room decor should include functional and kid (or pet) friendly items, such as easy-to-clean rugs, throw pillows and curtains.
