The homeowners’ brief, says Shruti Vyas, founder of Shruti Vyas Design, was simple and straightforward. They wanted “a minimalist, airy and comfortable living space; a design that was modern yet timeless”. To achieve this effect, the firm “chose to explore Scandinavian style and pastel tones” and went with a muted base palette which translated into neutral-coloured vitrified tiles, light wood-toned laminate for furniture, sheer white curtains in most rooms and pale soothing hues for the bedding and upholstery.

“The entrance has been perceived as a transitional welcoming space,” explains Vyas. A cosy feel has been achieved by a dark-coloured ceiling and dim lighting. A seating for two facing a textured brick wall completes the look, while the addition of a shaggy rug underfoot accentuates the feeling of warmth.

Tucked away to the right of the entrance is the guest bedroom, which is airy and full of natural light.

Going further in, the passageway opens into an open-plan layout consisting of the living, dining and kitchen areas.

The visual connect between the three zones is a welcome feature, considering the compactness of the apartment. As Vyas says, “This lends a warm setting for interaction amongst people using these multiple spaces.”

The living room, sporting a neutral palette, is marked by an L-shaped seating with two sofas; a couple of orange chairs bring in the required dash of colour. French windows leading to a small balcony behind the sofa are screened by flowing sheer curtains that soften the light coming through.

Printed monochrome canvas frames adorn the wall behind the sofa, in keeping with the muted colour scheme.

An opening in the wall separating the living and kitchen areas facilitates a connection between the zones, ideal to keep the conversation – and the snacks, going. The ledge can also double as a breakfast counter.

The dining area comprises a table that seats six, flanked by four chairs and a bench. “It was created in a neo-modern style, using fabricated metal legs and a marble top,” says Vyas. A small wash basin stands on a neat little console behind the dining area.

The kitchen is the one place that revels in bright colours, bringing a fresh vibe to the otherwise monochromatic space. A backsplash made of bright green tiles breaks the monotony of white. Explains Vyas, “ A white counter top along with a white modular kitchen gives the small area a larger look”.

The three main bedrooms lie at the end of the passage. A common bathroom is at the left of the passage, with two bedrooms at the right and the master bedroom at the far end.

“The bedroom sizes being modest, the clients wanted a spacious and uncluttered look to be achieved through interior design on a minimal budget.”
Shruti Vyas Design
The master bedroom is furnished in pastel tones that lend a soothing atmosphere to the interiors. The mirrored shutters on the wardrobe give an expansive feel, visually doubling the size of the room.

The fourth bedroom follows the underlying colour scheme of the house. The calming colours, trademark sheer curtains, tall windows and mirrored wardrobes, all make for an expansive-looking yet cosy space.
