Chanya Kaur was up for the challenge. Her multigenerational Juhu residence, which is spread over two floors, was due for renovation. Kaur was clear about her requirements. She says, “I wanted a practical house, so we were able to consider a variety of modern-minimalist and functional aesthetics, but with a touch of warmth.” She was also particular about creating avenues for allowing ample daylight into the space, “which has its own way of adding expansiveness and has a special mood-uplifting warmth.”
The house sports a mostly neutral palette of colours. The furniture is a mix of the old and the new, sourced from brands such as Minotti, Meridiani, JNL and Gubi, to name a few, with accent lights from Pulpo.

The large space is enclosed by full-height windows on both sides, letting in ample daylight. Instead of sheers, Kaur has used tie-up blinds, which are less common. “They bring an easygoing elegance and lightweight charm to the overall aesthetics,” she says.

A pair of stunning lamps, constructed of multiple glass discs and bowls, bring a good dose of style to the stairwell, where they hang before a piece of abstract art that echoes the circles of the lamps.
On the first floor, the layout is similar to the ground floor, with two seating arrangements. On the one side is a swish set-up in dark olive meant for formal get-togethers.
Just across it is a more relaxed arrangement in coral, the one exception for colour in the largely subtle palette. A rug in complementing hues anchors the cosy layout.

The family hang-out takes up the farthest end of the open-plan layout. Large, comfortable sofas make for relaxed viewing of the television that almost disappears in the chic black entertainment unit.
The dining room is a modish affair furnished in all-black. Paired with statement lights, it radiates suave sophistication, while the sandy marble floor lifts the dark scheme.

The other element that offsets the luxurious feel of the bedroom is a modern-minimalist Scandinavian design couch from Novamobili. Kaur says,"The highlight of this room, thus, is the juxtaposition of different aesthetics in a way that they work well together, while
maintaining their individuality as well.”

Grey wall tiles and sleek fittings in matching tones give the bathroom a glamorous and modern backdrop to complement the bedroom decor.
The son’s bedroom has a special aesthetic value addition in the form of a wallpapered ceiling. Its deep blue hues don’t overtake the overall layout or make the room appear dark, as the walls are light-coloured, and ample natural light makes its way into the room. The dark, slender lines of the four-poster and the blue rug pull the room together.
The attached walk-in wardrobe is clad in a rich, dark veneer that achieves a nice balance with the pale marble floors.
In the guest room, Kaur experimented with an ornate floral-pattern wallpaper from William Morris, serving as a foil to the four-poster bed with an unusual cane backing. The combination, though seemingly odd, brings a sense of warmth and elegance to the space.
