Delhi Houzz: Natural and Raw Finishes Score High in This Family Home
This home designed by groupDCA features a unified palette with distinctive nooks for every member
For this home for a multi-generational family, “there were different sets of requirements for everyone,” says Amit Aurora, principal architect and co-founder, groupDCA. “The grandparents’ room called for something light and airy, the clients wanted a bedroom that was streamlined and minimal, while the teenage children wanted themes to reflect globe-trotting and literature.”
What tied it all together were the “natural materials and finishes like exposed brick walls, stone flooring and sandblasted wood [which] blended with the contemporary elements that imparted a sense of eclecticism,” says Rahul Bansal, principal architect and co-founder, groupDCA.

Running through the house is a corridor that forms a central circulation spine. A glass-enclosed living area sits opposite the main door. To the left is an open-plan dining room, kitchen and family lounge.
From here, the corridor leads to the master bedroom, the client’s parents’ bedroom and the daughter’s bedroom. To the right of the main door lies the son’s bedroom.

The drawing room features custom pieces such as this pendant hemispherical chandelier and a contemporary wall installation that contrasts with the rustic brick wall. Most furniture pieces have been kept simple, with clean lines and a light finish. They pair well with an artistic cast-aluminium column, ornate carpets and a vintage gramophone. Andhra stone has been used on the floor, while the ceiling features oak-wood planks.
“We were approached when the floor plate was cast and outer walls were already in place. We felt the design lacked adequate provision for natural light and circulation,” explains Aurora. To solve this, the architects modified the internal walls and carved out floor-to-ceiling windows to flood the open-plan dining room with natural light.
Deep-blue Eames DSW replica chairs were chosen to offset the raw natural finish of the dining table.

The moss-green panelled cabinetry and sleek white countertops complement the rusticity and hue of the exposed-brick kitchen backsplash. “The layout of the kitchen was designed keeping functionality as the most important factor. The open plan allows for ample circulation and we made sure to add enough light sources, storage and work space,” he adds.
The palette of natural materials and finishes continues in the powder room. The focal point is the copper pedestal sink that features nature-inspired motifs and a hammered copper finish column.
The master bedroom is a combination of white walls and dirt-yellow polished wooden surfaces. A statement feature is the wood-panelled ceiling that runs down the wall, behind the headboard, visually sectioning the sleeping area. “We kept the furniture streamlined, while using dark wood panels on the floor to anchor and balance the space,” Bansal says.
In the attached bathroom, a circular mirror is paired with a sleek wooden vanity. Adding a pop of colour to the muted palette is a bright blue vessel sink. Rustic wall tiles and vintage-inspired pendant lamps add interest and texture.
“The daughter wanted her bedroom to double as a calm space for reading,” Aurora says. The statement feature here is the exposed brick wall painted a cool grey, which forms the perfect backdrop for a modern four-poster bed and sleek metal swing.
At the opposite end of the home, across from the living room, is the son’s bedroom, which features a travel-inspired theme. “We added a world map with a vintage feel to the wall behind the bed,” Bansal says. An exposed brick wall and dark wood panel floors add to the rustic vibe.
