1-BHK: 4 Ways to Deal With a Small Space

You will be surprised at how much style, charm and functionality can be accommodated in a small home

It’s common to find people living in 1-BHKs today – rising rents and the growing cost of living in large metros are to blame. That being said, a compromise on space doesn’t mean a compromise on comfort. A single-bedroom home, too, can be cosy, welcoming and well-designed if you plan it correctly. Below are a few ideas to help you get going.

1. Distract with colour and accessories
This small home’s design is a clever play with distraction. The impactful palette, fascinating art and plenty of tiny displays overcome the small square-footage of the home. The living room has a lot of art with red accents that are highlighted by the aqua walls. The small office space is filled with inspiring objects, graphic art and hand-made drawings.

2. Create multipurpose spaces
This one-bedroom apartment has a quirky, eclectic character and a snug vibe. The first small room is designed as a multipurpose space, housing living and dining spaces, a music area and a home office (thanks to a compact table and chair). The bedroom accommodates a large bed that allows for plenty of storage underneath it. A tall mirror next to the bed doubles as a dressing area. Small cabinets and tables serve as places to display art and curios.

3. Expand the space you have
A one-bedroom flat was revamped to get more space, functionality and design. The designer ripped out nearly all of the walls and moved the position of the kitchen to the other side of the apartment. Doing this created an extra bedroom and bathroom, converting the 1-BHK into a 2-BHK. An open-plan living space thus emerged, embellished with a fresh, contemporary aesthetic and peppered with space-boosting geometric patterns.

4. Experiment with ingenious storage ideas
A visually light but functionally robust storage system can work wonders in a one-bedroom house – and this is exactly what the designers did. The TV unit made of veneer and laminate holds all the TV paraphernalia and curios, and is made up of interconnected modules that flow into each other, leaving occasional gaps, drawing the eye outwards to the window and upwards to the ceiling, thereby making the area look light and spacious. A single solid cabinet would have been static and massive in its effect.

In the reading room, a niche is fitted with a bookshelf unit made of laminate and light metal framework, and painted in soft, light colours. The open system is a clever solution to storage as it does not look bulky, nor does it take up precious square footage.
