Convert our 2-BHK (2 bedrooms, hall, kitchen) home into a 3-BHK, the clients told Sonali Shah of mybeautifulife. Their growing daughter needed to have her own bedroom. “So I converted the kitchen into a room for her, and divided the living room into a lounge-cum-dining-cum-kitchen,” Shah says. The interior design of the space was also left completely to her judgement.

This city apartment opens into a passageway which has mirrors on either side; a tall storage unit for shoes is enclosed within the mirror-on-mirror wall. “The round ornamental piece was chosen to give the entrance a grand quality – it also makes the passage seem bigger,” Shah says.
Scattered motifs have been used on the ceiling, “among which I’ve placed rimless lights, so the ceiling design looks organic and eclectic,” Shah says.

The flooring of the house is in pink-veined marble. “That inspired me to use this tone as the base colour for the home – in the furniture, detailing and walls,” Shah says.
In the living room, a vintage-style picture in customised aluminium mosaic on the partition wall behind the sofa gives depth and character to the home. “The sofas are upholstered in snake leather; the organic-shaped rose-gold centre table was specially imported for this space,” Shah says.

The dining area is a multi-utility space, which accommodates an open kitchen, a breakfast table and an island. “I’ve designed it in a way that six people can be seated here, with the two tall chairs (with rose-gold legs), two transparent acrylic chairs and a built-in ledge designed for the grandparents,” Shah says.
A wooden floor-to-ceiling storage unit on the right conceals a refrigerator and chinaware. “I customised this light installation as a visual demarcation between the living room and kitchen,” Shah says.

The daughter’s bedroom, which was originally the kitchen, is furnished as a quirky space, with all the elements chosen to her liking. “The bed has a Bottega-style finish. We gave a metallic Eiffel Tower base to the study table and it continues as an Eiffel Tower clock above. All other elements, like the butterflies on the wall, the flower on the fan, patchwork-style flooring and the industrial-style lights are used to give the space a playful look,” Shah says.

The master bedroom is in shades of blue and green, with various shimmery, nature-inspired elements dotting the area. “The bed is custom-made with a blue tufted headboard. The lights on the left side of the bed have a silver foil detail on them and are like outdoor lights. This makes for an interesting feature at night,” Shah says.
A flock of sculptured metal birds wings its way across the wall above the headboard, making a nice counterpoint to the wallpaper birds.

Across from the bed is the TV unit (though as yet without a TV, in this image), backed by an eye-catching wallpaper decorated with embroidered birds.
The wardrobes next to the bed have mirror-clad shutters in a barcode design all the way to the far wall. “The reflective surface helps create an illusion of extended space,” Shah says. The large mirror adjacent to the wardrobe doors expands the visual space still more.

The grandparents’ bedroom is furnished in a mellow palette, where nature-inspired elements continue to flow through the room’s design. “The bed is a Fendi-inspired design. I’ve increased the height of the headboard to make the room look taller and for the users’ increased comfort. The window shade was hand-painted with floral details,” Shah says.
The suspended lighting grid system above the bed changes colour (check the pictures above and left for the colour changes), giving the room a dynamic quality.

“The wardrobe next to the bed has leather and crystal details. Next to the neutral storage we decided to keep a printed carpet for some colour,” Shah says.

A small puja space lies in front of the bed, with a background of embossed velvet wallpaper. “We hung traditional style brass lights beside the platform, which is made for the grandparents to carry out their daily prayers,” Shah says. The acrylic chair in the corner doesn’t take up too much visual space.
