Unusual Ways to Decorate Your Way to an Unforgettable Party
Here are 10 quirky, clever & fresh examples to beat those run-of-the-mill decoration ideas for celebratory get-togethers
Deck the outdoors and just about everywhere else next festive season. And fortunately for us in India, the festive season stretches pretty much throughout the whole year. Be it Christmas, New Year’s, Holi or Diwali, it’s one occasion after the other. So take a look at these creative party decorations that will stay relevant and bring cheer to your home throughout the year.
2. Oversized paper lanterns like these add to the whole festive atmosphere. During the day, they bring lightness and colour to the space, and at night they weave a magical world of beautiful hues. No wonder these are popular in both garden and balcony parties.
3. If you are looking for a more DIY kind of a hanging decorations project, then these tissue-paper pompoms are for you.
Replicate the effect of delicate pendants by hanging up these white pompoms. Scrunch and fold crisp tissue or thin tracing paper into shapes. Attach them to the ceiling with a length of thin string. Even good-quality cellotape will hold them in place, as they’re so light. Wind a few twinkling fairy lights around them, and you will have a beautiful room.

4. I’m so much in love with this patio-cum-garden set up where the long lengths of wispy ribbon and delicate lace hang down and waft gently over the table, with tea lights glimmering below. Just make sure the decorations stay high enough to be safe from catching fire.
5. The Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea party must have looked like this, complete with colourful buntings that tap into a vintage look. Set up your table in the shade of a tree, with old-style linen, floral crockery and even a cake-stand. Bring out the throws and the cushions. Trail colourful fabric buntings between the branches of the tree or on the plants around, and sit back and enjoy the scene you have created.
6. Another great idea is doily decor. Don’t they look like dreamcatchers? For me, this is the easiest of the DIY projects – simply use pretty scraps or doilies stretched on embroidery hoops! The whites and pale blues add to the light and happy mood. Very Santorini.
Notice how the swing has been made by refurbishing old chairs? Let’s count that, too, as a great tip for ‘hanging decor’.

7. Agreed, birdcages are not everyone’s cup of tea. But there’s something bewitching about them.
Take your brunch to a whole new level by setting up cosy seating with cane armchairs or a wooden pallet covered with large mats and bohemian floor cushions. Bring out the bird cages – there is no end to what you can do with these vintage items. Paint them, add a frill, fill them with string lights or tea lights, slip old photographs between the bars, display them on the table or simply hang them from a tree. They will add to the charm of a lazy afternoon well spent in your own secret garden.

8. Step up the mood in your garden by hanging a mirror or a bunch of mirrors. Get creative with fancy frames in bold colours and place them on the wall or the hedge fence. The whimsy of it will take your guests by surprise. The mirrors will also help in making smaller outdoor areas seem larger.
9. For a classic Christmas, we need snow. Or, at least, lots of something white. The easiest way to create a festive hanging – a snowy chandelier, as I would like to call it – is by covering an existing light fixture with feathers and adding glass ornaments, pearls and maybe even string lights. See how gorgeous this looks over the dining table? Who said Christmas ornaments were only for trees?
10. There is something special about beautiful lights hanging from a tree and a dining table underneath it. Easy DIY, if you like climbing trees. Use candle-holders of good-quality glass or they may break due to the heat from the tea lights. You can use battery-operated lights instead, if you prefer. If climbing a tree seems too much of an adventure, hang these from its lower branches or from temporary hooks attached to any convenient support nearby.
It would be unwise to climb this ramshackle ladder, but what a great way to salvage it. Tiny light fixtures in mason jars hung from bronze chains bring a charming rustic delight to the scene of your soiree. A great DIY project for a creative soul.
Another excellent way to add lights to a party is to do a mash-up of a variety of factory-style pendants. Adding to the industrial decor is a giant wooden farm table surrounded by well-worn metal chairs.

Choose flowers with long stems, tie them in a sheaf or weave them into a little roof on a frame. Suspend your artistic creation above the dining table or arrange it round the light fixture.
