Living room is large, dining room is small and never enough room for a large dinner party. Since we have a large family room, large living room is not necessary.
Could you post a few photos showing the two rooms? Also post some specific questions if you have some - or your thoughts about what you might like to do to change the two rooms.

I would go for it, as long as the new dining room will be close to the kitchen. It's best to use the rooms in the way that they are more functional for your lifestyle and your family's needs.
