Dilemma with new family room furniture

I’m looking to purchase new furniture for my living room. I want to replace the couch and the chairs by the fireplace (something lighter looking- not so heavy). I am keeping the tv stand and the tv now hangs on the wall. The curtains in the picture have been changed out for a flowered pattern of white, teal and orange.

My dilemma is do I….

Opt for a sectional with left facing arm (this can prove difficult to find as it can’t extend beyond the knee wall). Or
Get a sofa (would want to fit at least 3) and a wall hugging recliner (challenge here is how would it fit and look?)

Any help/suggestions, and pictures, are much appreciated!

First you need to post a picture of the room as itis now.

The orange curtains are off putting to me but you say they aren't even there anymore. A sofa and 2 chairs are more versatile for arranging. What are the dimensions of the room? The rug is too small. We need to see the floral curtains to suggest anything color wise.

I think your inclination toward rustic and distressed pieces is the right way to go. Consider a movable coffee table - I see 2 recliners that may necessitate some table shifting?- an area rug large enough to incorporate all the seating, rather than just a hearth rug, and enclosed storage for your electronics. If you can post shots of the room, other Houzers may have some more ideas.

Tell us more. How many do you need to seat on a daily basis? I agree that there is too many matching pieces, but even so, it can look nice. Since all the furniture is lined up and matching, I think a large area rug in the center and ONE large and long (custom) coffee table will bring all of the perimeter furniture "together". Mismatched (yet coordinated) toss pillows will make the furniture seem "seamless". It won't look "designer" but it can look different and a neat space for a lot of people to gather.

For the living room, the focus should be the balcony area. So flipping the couch to face the wall and not the dining table will help. Kind of like this pic. Even if you already have the sectional that is in the diagram, you should be able to flip it. In fact a sectional would probably work better than the couch in this pic. I also really don't like the style of this pic, but it showed what I meant, For the girls' room: No matter which bedroom you choose, you should maximize floor space so that they have the biggest play space possible in their room (as they get older you can add desks for school work and such). To get this space, I would give them bunk beds. This configuration gives them an open feel and more storage, essential for girls. You posted two different kitchen designs. This makes it hard to give you advice. I agree with other posts that your sink should be away from the wall. This allows you to have stuff to the left of you (drying dishes in my house), while you wash vegetables on the right of the sink. You need the same space on both sides of the stove, also. At least 24 inches on both sides is good. 36 is better, though. The first design has a nice little countertop space that adds a place for your daughters a space to sit a watch/ talk to you while you're in the kitchen. When they added this to the first design, you lost cabinets on the other wall. This is bad, as the space is already storage limited. Try making the rounded countertop bump out into the living space more. If you play with the shape, you could make it work without losing the cabinets on the other side. It doesn't have to be rectangular or a perfect circle. You can see how this one isn't confined to the floor plan of the kitchen. I think this is what you would need to do to make it the most functional.

We bought one with premium leather from Kardiel for our library. It is super comfy and well made. 1.5 years and so far so good. Getting a second for my family room, but may spring for a knoll original this time. It will be interesting to compare.

a low profile sofa with exposed legs, no sectional for such a confined space.

edit. do you need so many floral arrangements? are they real?

Both windows need the same treatment.

Purchase a sleek, one cushion sofa, one chair facing fireplace, one rug, and consider removing the fan and replace with ceiling light (on a dimmer). (Your console and t v are where the second sofa is in the inspiration photo.)

I don't see the need of two chairs at the fireplace. I do see why one good size rug, a good size sofa, a coffee table, will work for with the sofa and accommodate your guests. Keep the room clear of stuff. If you want a plant, choose live, and put it in the corner by the window.

My last thoughts are the art over the fireplace. It's too common. I see it in every TJMX and Home Goods. Find the rug and art first and then shop for furniture.

Wall paint for the living room, kitchen walls, trim and ceiling: one color will make the entire space feel so much bigger. Think the white of the fireplace on the ceiling(flat finish), the walls (eggshell finish), for trim, use the finish on the fireplace surround.

Now for the fireplace...crown molding should continue all around the room.

You said any suggestions...I see great possibilities for the room.

A sofa with two chairs would make things easier to arrange and give you multiple layout options. You could even look at apartment sized furniture and a reversible chaise if you're looking at a sectional.
